I can't figure out what's happening to my hair. In the past year, my hair's become crunchy and dry, and i don't understand why. I'm still using the same types of shampoos and conditioners that i used 4 years ago...this never happened before with them. And i have a shower filter on my shower head, so it can't be the chlorine..and it can't be my diet either, because my diet has remained consistent in the past 4 years. Any insight on this strange occurence?
Sometimes your hair will just change as you get older... maybe you should try changing the shampoo formula you're using - if you've been using it for 4 years, maybe your hair doesn't like it anymore, or maybe there's some buildup.
If your hair is feeling dry and straw-like there are plenty of options... my favourite being some coconut oil, just a little, applied to the hair while still wet - it seals in the moisture and stops your hair from drying out.
There are special shampoos and conditioners - the 'aussie' range are fantastic - I use my girlfriend's whenever I'm staying with her.
One more thing - if you're spending more time outdoors than you used to, that can dry out your hair (depending on weather, of course).

See a professional, pure and simple. Most of us guys on this site are "pretend" professionals. But the truth is when a man grows his hair out, he's dealing with some quirky alternatives if he's not seeking advice along the way from those who have the schooling and the experience to help out. Remember, the longer your hair, the older it is, the more care it's going to need. Most of the longhaired men in magazines, those who are entertainers, and those who fill up photo sites on the web all receive professional care. If they need that assistance, don't you think we deserve it too?
Good luck and keep the Hyperboard posted on what you find out, man.

Could be hormonal depending on how old your age : ) as hormones control sebum production, if you hair is getting drier it could be that your scalp is producing less oils (sebum) which is leading to your hair changing texture. It would be best to go the doctors to test for under/over active thyroid, or I believe insulin also plays a role in sebum production and correlates to the amount of sugar you eat... I guess it why many people think eating sweets gives them spots...but if you diet is the same perhaps not... however if you diet is the 'same' it could be that you are deficient in some vit/min or trace elements. Or it simply may be the fact that you've used the same shampoo/cond for 4 years! (you've really never changed?!...) anyhows you may have some major buildup in which case you may like to try a clarifying treatment shampoo or vinegar rinse. As long as your hair is not damaged it should be able to return back to its old self perhaps invest in some protein treatments and use a salon intensive conditioner weekly till it starts to get better...
Just because you are using the SAME shampoo & conditioner
does NOT mean that the ingredients haven't been changed over the years!
I agree with others here: Perhaps you have build-up.
Believe it or not, even conditioners are capable of making your
hair feel dry, stiff and even 'crunchy'...over time.
Try using some kind of clarifying shampoo or
even a nice vinegar rinse (2- teaspoons vinegar to 16oz of warm water).
Then condition as usual.
God Luck and let us know how it goes!
