Last April 2003 I started growing my hair out from a shaved head. This was the first real time I grew my hair out, and discovered it to be thick curly/wavy hair. I was upset, because I wanted straight long hair, so in December 2003 I got my hair chemically straightened and trimmed. Now at the present time, my hair is basically breaking off (I think), and has major split ends. The hairs seem to be breaking off from the part that was straightened. Now I have about 2 and a half inches of my real hair coming in and about 4-5 inches of the damaged straighted hair. Obviously this looks like complete crap and my question is, should I just shave my head again and start over? I've learned to accept my curly hair and want to grow it long. Or should I just attempt to trim the straightened/damaged part off myself, keeping it long on top and short around the back/sides? (every hair cutter around here will never get it right). Thank you for any advice,
Dan
2. DO NOT try and cut your hair yourself - its physically impossible to do a good job unless you have REALLY long hair.
If you don't trust the hairdressers in you area, then maybe you have a friend (ideally one who trained or 'used to be' a stylist) who can cut your hair for you.
That said I'd try the conditioning treatment first.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I tried deep conditioner. I used Bed Head Ego Boost deep conditioner split end mender for about a month and no results. I've decided to go with my sister's friend who is a stylist in training. Now, with this cut should I keep it all one length all around, or keep the top longer? What's the best form for growing long curly thick hair? Thanks in advance,
Dan
My hair is both curly and thick, and is now about 11 inches long.
I had my sister trim the back (I think it was about 6 months into growing) and while it helped at the moment to keep it from looking like a mullet (whatever) my hair is just now (at over 19 months) brushing my shoulders.
I would reccommend just letting it grow however it wants. Curly headed folk can get away with minor "imperfections" in their hair, as the curls tend to hide them.
The haul is longer for curly hair, but well worth it. I'm glad you've decided to just go with it. GOOD LUCK!

Sounds like you need a major reconstructor.... depending on where you live try to get aphogee, its the best one... but I think its only in the US.. otherwise get a normal reconstructor treatment and leave it on for about half an hour an give it a few blasts with a hair dryer... then follow with a decent intensive conditioner an see how it is... ideally you should go to a salon an have it proffessionally done, maybe not the one you had it straightened at tho as they may be defensive about their treatment causing damage an try to fobb you off...but if its bad they should be able to see....You'll also have to have the split ends cut off cos nothings gonna fix them now : ( As far as I know chemical straightening doesnt last forever so your hair may slowly become wavy/curly again...? tho im not sure about this... if it looks too wierd you may have to cut your losses (literally) : (
