Hi Im ben I just wondered why you decieded to grow your hair?? I started to grow my hair because i saw an advert for Archers Aqua ( a drink) and the man on the advert had brown/blond hair about sholder length or a bit longer and a side parting and i thought he looked really good!!
I would really apresheate any comments and replys????
just to get the rockstar look. I look up to people like kurt cobain. Im a guitarist, so long hair would really enhance the whole experience ya know what i mean?
I began growing mine out to deal with my complusion for haircuts. I have not had one since December 6th. That is almost a record for me. You guys on the board have been very good for me. Lots of encouragement.
Thanks,
Steve
I never really thought about it, but it could be because of my intense love of Hercules : The Legendary Journeys. I really really like Kevin Sorbo...his whole style in and out of character, and his long hair and ruggedness are rad.
I used to LOVE watching Xena WP, I had every single one on tape...im not ashamed to say! Didnt really watch much of Hercules tho... Iolus used to do my head in a bit. Plus Xena had the whole lesbian will they wont they thing going (I dunno about hercules...?)
I guess mine would be... erm..probably after seein Interview WTV...I dunno... I just really like the feel of hair! plus I'd had a messy spiky texture thing going on for ages when most others here had crewcuts, then everyone else started the spiky look so wanted a change to be 'diferent' I guess. I guess Tom Cruise would be the look im going for, I actually bought the MI2 dvd just to see his hair a while back *shameful* and have it stashed away in my room so that I dont have to explain to anyone why I bought it... its a bad film.
Well, I never liked short hair on me anyway, I mean hardly ever, I think it looked gay and boring. I don't know why I didnt grow it out earlier in my life, although I had it long and it was blonde until I had it cut at age 5:(
I don't remember how it felt, so to answer your question is that I had a bad hairuct from my sister in November, which the next day I promptly went to the butchers for it to be evened out.
They ended cutting it all to the shortest layer my sister had cut the day before = I was gutted. In January, I thought it was time for another haircut, but I really didn't want one, then I had the idea to grow my hair, and promptly searched it on yahoo to find this awesome website. I'm now 5 1/4 months into growing and it feels great, when I run, I can feel my hair move, and its amazing lol.
My mate is in a band called Warpath and he grew his hair out, from looking like a weed before, to cool after. I suppose he influenced me a little.
Ben, I know the advert you talk about.
Progress pics, and what I looked like with short hair (i've looked worse!)
because i thought it was stupid to cut my hair all the time.
i just let life shape me, and it so happens that my hair wants to grow.
a friend has long hair too, maybe it had an effect

I really just hate short hair. It's incredibly uncomfortable for me. I still have nightmares of my spiked haircut done at a mall in the fall of 2001. I did really go through a lot growing, it sucked. I also love knowing my hair has life and can move freely.
I never used to care about my hair or image until I was in hospital last month (my first time ever). Lemme tell you, two weeks in a hospital bed is a real eye opener.
Ever since I got out, I've wanted to really care about myself properly, and I want a style change. Inspired by Oded Fehr in The Mummy and Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai, I figured 'why not?'. Long black hair can look extra cool, maybe I can do that too.
And at the same time, it's something different. Which I like. :)
I grew up in the late sixties, early seventies, I imagine that era had a bit to do with it, but I personally have always thought i looked better with long hair. I'm also fond of the way it feels down my back. I'm growing to terminal length, and it's the longest it's ever been, a little over elbow length. It's an addictive feeling having all that silky hair all over ya!!!

that just came over me one day, strange to say.
The day was gray in wintertime...overcast sky and I
was feeling down while listening to some music.
Then suddenly, I just happened to look down and noticed
the long hair on one of the guys in the CD book.
Without even thinking, it seems, I just made the decision...
or rather, the decision was made for me...that I must have long hair.
After that fateful day, I could not even think of a pair of scissors
to come near even a single hair of my head!
It has to be one of the strangest experiences of my life:
Imagine going through all the awkward phases bewildered,
wondering why I could not cut my hair and yet sometimes
even hating myself for the way I looked!
Glad it happened though; happy with my long hair now...
even though I cannot take any 'credit' for it!
I've always liked that look and was often drawn to men (not romantically) who had the long hair/ beard combination.
I just feel that that this is 'right' for me, it's hard to put into words...
I wear my hair long because its my body's own natural hairstyle. Why fight one's nature?
Ed
I wonder...why do humans as an exception to all other animals have hair that gets so long?

Long hair on humans is a sexual lure. This is true of both women and men. Anything to the contrary is just cultural.
Reflective hit on the reason: our long hair is likely the result of selection in breeding. There are many related examples from the animal kingdom, like the monkey with the hideously large nose because females liked their males that way!
Ed
Ah, the good old Proboscis Monkey, hehe. I'm not sure I agree with the theory though.
Regarding humans, terminal lengths vary greatly among races and I believe that the indoor out-of-the-weather lifestyle which Europeans (ie whites) have been leading for 1-2000 years (depending) has been conductive to hair growth along with of course, our "tribal" genetics.
It protects you from the sun, wind, rain,
falling branches, swords to the back of the neck.
Preserves body heat, and allows humans to tell the world
something about their personality and/or rank among other humans.
What about horses and lions? Interestingly, both considered beautiful animals by humans. Of course, I don't think I've ever seen an animal with hair so long that it could become a nuisance or a hazard if not restrained. Humans have hands and brains so the hair is not a problem. We have the power to make decisions about it and do stuff with it. So whatever you do with your hair, even if you cut it, it's uniquely human.
You make a great point.
So are my fingernails, nose hair, and eyebrows, but I trim all of those, not to mention the other annoying body hair I can't stand. Screw that. :)
Which is why I'm also getting ready to lock up soon.
I couldn't agree with you more. Why fight ones nature? Why fight what nature wants for us?
I totally agree and I think waist length and longer hair on both men and women looks great. It would be nice if more people had really long hair. Absalom
Hey, I'm trying... just give me another eight years or so, lol
I agree that length is the nature of hair.
Because it's what I've wanted since the earliest time I can remember!
Same here.
Bill
I could list many of the reasons already mentioned, being a child of the 80's and a rock/heavy metal freak long hair was a big part of the culture, hair naturally wants to be long, etc.
What it comes down to is simple, I've tried it long and short, and long hair I simply like it long.
I had always had longer hair and several years ago thought the "in" short Haircut that everyone had might look nice. After that Haircut all I wanted to do was vomit. I looked like a Cancer Patient being treated.............or even like a Criminal with that short haircut. (And to think, at one time I had a tail down to my waist.) So, now it is longer (12+")and I have NO INTENTIONS of ever having short hair again. It just isn't me. It will grow to terminal.
Hi Ben I have always liked long hair ever since I was really little although I was'nt allowed to grow it until after I left school, and as soon as I left school that's just what I did. Apart from a couple of times when I went short I have always had long hair and it is about 5 inches past my shoulders at the moment. that seems to be the longest I can get it to grow but I am happy to have it that length although I would prefer another four inches. I have'nt cut it short in over 12 years so maybe there is a limit to terminal length?
I guess I grew up in the seventies and eighties and was always into the music scene where long hair was more the norm. Really I don't think that anything else suits me but I always think that it looks better on guys anyway.

Do you remember the movie "Neverending Story"? Well it was my favourite movie for a long time when I was in elementary school and I still think it is a great story. I admired the lead character Atrayiu who had longish hair and about then is when I started to want longer hair. I think I forgot about that for a while until I saw the movie Stargate and the villain in the movie who had long hair. Both of these guys were sorta unisex. Jaye Davidson in Stargate also starred in The Crying Game. I guess women are so beautiful in my eye that looking like one as a guy is a good thing to me. Insane in the membrane...
Oh My God that was my all time favorout movie i loved that guys hair it is soo cool isent it !!
Hi Ben,
My reason for growing my hair is two-fold. First and foremost is because I finally can! Up until now I had been unable to grow it because of parents and job policies. The place where I work now is really cool about that stuff and I'm one of 3 longhairs there (all mid-backers).
My second reason is that I think it's just cool. I like the way it feels...it's totally awesome.
The first time I saw long hair on guys was with the Beatles. I thought it was just really cool looking and I wanted it from that point on. I was able to wear it just below my ears during school, but that was it. Now, there's no reason for me to cut it. It's something that I wanted to do and it makes me feel free...finally I am in charge of my life...it only took 41 years to do it! I'll be 44 this year and I have no regrets and my friends and family are cool with it.
Take care and keep it growing!
Brett
from a tiny England town called Liverpool. That group
was known as the quarrymen. I started growing my hair
long in 1964 and didn't stop until it reached waist length.
I just was too lazy to get a haircut. That and the fact that the old guy who cut my hair always tried to use the buzzer thing.
It's not long yet, but getting there, another two years maybe? heh, people've been saying it;s "LONG"(with emphasis), but it's only a few inches. Probably because I have to flick my head constantly to get my bangs out of my eyes. Gotta figure out how to keep it parted down the middle.
Oh, girls like it too.
A continual discontentment with my hair in any 'style' [I hate styles!] to the point I wished I would go bald rather than have to decide on what way to fix it.
Out of frustration I let it grow and my discontentment left. Great!
Things I love about my long hair: I dont have a style [although many of my peers have argued that I do].
I have a set routine for hair care and rarely deviate from it this means I rarely have bad hair days.
I dont feel head cloned like many guys I see every day. I only have haircuts every 3 months [I especially love this; I hate haircuts all that tugging at your hair and cut hair itching your collar all day yeesh! *shivers*].
Things I hate about long hair:
People making comments or judgments about you because of your hair [why do they do this? Why do people say get a hair cut! Whats it got to do with you buddy, am I interfering with your way of life?!].
Short story at this point: I recently attended interview and was offered a fairly good position. Now, my girlfriend was telling one of her girlfriends that I had been offered a position at which she responded Wow, did he cut his hair?...!! Not well done or congratulations no, she was utterly confused and serious in her comment. She could not understand that a long haired male could be offered such a position!! Can you believe that some people think like this?! I despair!
Where was i? oh yes .
A longer hair care routine sometimes Im just lazy.
Paranoia, e.g. what if this interviewer is prejudice against long haired males? [After all, my girlfriends friend is, shes a professional and its not unlikely that she could reach a recruitment position in the future...god help us!].
Finding loose hair everywhere! Shirts, sweaters, on the floor, in the shower...man, I think I shed more than some family pets!
Ummm, thats about it I think went on a bit didnt i?
I also have a hair routine. Saves lots of time!
You are correct about some people reacting negatively or in strange
ways when they see a Longhair but,
hey, isn't that just a part of the whole picture?
People tend to see anything 'different' as something that
has to be 'corrected' or brought back to something 'normal.'
Maybe this world will never change.
Anyway, that's a part of what being a Longhair is all about.
Thanks for sharing your story & info!
initially i was curious what i would look like... had long considered growing it out.
now cutting would be unnatural
I was into the heavy rock, biker and hippie scenes. Also the fact that my parents were opposed to long hair, coupled with fact that I dig my heels in when people tell me what to do, really made me determined to have long hair. That was thirty years ago, and now I can scarcely imagine having short hair.
More recently, a mere twenty years ago, a girl pointed out that my hair that I thought was long was not really long compared with hers and with girls' hair. I took that as another challenge, and grew out the layers that I had back then and grew it much longer.
I find it interesting how a lot of the younger guys are growing their hair out from buzz cuts. That was never in fashion for the time and place that I grew up, so even when my hair was short as a child it was never anything like as short as that, for which I am truly grateful.
I decided to grow my hair because its something I'd wanted to do since I was about 8 years old.
Concerns about what others would think, prevented me from growing it out when I was a kid, and finally once I was over this I suffered from OCD during which I would habitually cut my hair shorter and shorter.
I finally managed to make a start in January 2003, aged 24. I guess you could say I've been meaning to do this for 16 years and now I've finally gotten around to it.
Hey, that'a a bit like me. I was 8 when I first wanted to have long hair, after reading a kid's book where the guy there had long hair. However, I only was able to get around 3-4 months without a cut at any given time, until I reached 23, after which I started growing and only have had trims upto now. (I'm 33)

Simple: so I can project a more feminine appearance!
16 months growth; highlights yesterday at the salon. How fun!
Terri
It looks good. It's easy to style. My barber "Micky" left town and I spent several years with unworthy substitutes who always botched it. Every other month, annother lousy cut. And finally, I always wanted it and decided that fear of "what others might think" just wasn't a good enough reason for cutting anymore.
Good, good point Mr. NoVA....I'd forgotten what a horrible pain it was to roll the dice every couple of months and risk looking like sheit (in my opinion) for a few weeks when I'd get a haircut. What a hassle it was to find someone...train them how I like it...have them move and go looking around for someone competent enough and do it all again.
