I just put Henna on my hair for the first time in years. I have a lot more grey hairs than I used to, and my wife has been bugging me to dye my hair, but I didn't feel comfortable with that. I was worried about damage and about the roots growing out, etc.
I thought that my hair might be too grey to use Henna, but I did some research, and it seems that it's only a problem if you have more than 30% grey. I also read that mixing in coffee, which is normally done to get a darker colour, is a good idea with greying hair, so that's what I did.
I haven't washed my hair yet, so wish me luck. Hopefully my hair won't come out green or orange!
I see only two problems with this procedure. Firstly, my wife hates the smell of coffee, and secondly, with a beard and my hair up in a turban I could be arrested as a terrorist!
It didn't work! I didn't get much coverage of the grey atall. My hair has a slight red tinge, and it feels very soft, but there seem to be about as many grey hairs as before.
Sorry that it didn't work. I've read about henna too, and I know that it is supposed to give a chestnut tinge to darker hair. You could try doubling the dosage (I don't know how much you used), make a really strong decoction but I can't say what effect it'll have, probably won't do much for grey hair.
Henna will always leave some sort of red tint, no matter what the colour on the box says, or what you mix with it. Also, once you apply henna, your hair is so thickly coated with it that any other type of colour you put on your hair after will not have guaranteed results.
Whatever you do dont apply a reg dye over a henna!!!! it can 'kill' your hair. The henna makes it porus I believe, and you cant use another chem dye until its totally washed off. You can henna over henna tho. You could use veg dyes (when the henna wares off) swarzthcoft (sp!!?) does some that last 3 washes and wont damage your hair....
