Hey all, I wanted some advice on having layers put into my hair. I don't really know what they do, or what happens, or whether I will be having it at all done, probably not, at least not now anyway.
I would appreciate any explanations what it means when layers are put into your hair.
Thank you
Layers is when your hair is different lengths down the head overlapping as they go down. Not a good idea for most wanting to grow their hair long because layers tend to make the hair bigger in appearance. I know this from experience. The hair growing from a buzz cut grows in layers although all the hair is generally the same length, providing the hair is not trimmed to even it up along the way. Peace!
Treyn is right, most people are trying to get rid of their layers when they are growing out, as they are trying to get their hair to all fall to one length.
If you grow out from any short style where the back and sides are blended in to the top then you will grow out with layers. Short Layered hairstyles tend to be a little wilder and more prone to looking a mess because the upper layers are not fully covering the layer underneath, so the lower layers have less hair holding them in place. This can make hair more prone to be poofy and look big.
(That was A little verbose, read it twice you'll get the idea.)
However with long hair layers have the opposite effect they reduce volume, but the layers should not be cut too short otherwise they won't be long enough to tie back and they become annoying.

I included a pic, do you think I need some sort of layering, or is it ok?
Thanks for your help, and for everyone else who replied.
You have layering... notice that the hair at the base of your neck falls to your collar & the hair on your crown just falls down a few inches?
These are Layers.
Your hair looks well blended, nothing looks out of place, its about as layered as you can make a hairstyle. There is no sense in trying to put more layers in its a virtual impossibility!
Lol, thanks, now I definately know what layering is... I think!
Now for the second question, do you think I should have them taken out!:)
Thanks for the help, it is really...helpful:)
Not until your hair is passed your shoulders. Then you should probably start trimming the back and sides up to remove some of your layers. You might not want to take them all out, I don't.
That said you'll probably have a maintenance trim in the meantime which will do some of the work a little early, I did, but I only ever really shaped my style by doing it, I've only just started trimming out my layers.
No problemo!
Don't most people growing there grow it out to the length they desire. Then beginning trimming it until the upper layer gets even witht he bottom. Or vice versa trim the bottom to be even with the top?
Yes - I'm just stating the earliest stage you should begin trimming out layers. IE: Not BEFORE your hair is past shoulder length.
Oh ok I understand what you mean......Ug that last post had some horrid typing errors on my behalf.
Hairdressers will tell you that layers will either add more volume to your hair or create less volume if it is very thick (go figure). In reality, and speaking from experience of having had various layered hairstyles for the past seven years (I kept the bottom at around shoulder length), they create one unending Awkward Stage. Please, STAY AWAY FROM LAYERS!!!
Also, trying to grow them out as I am, is a nightmare.
There are different types of layering you can get. As you grow out your hair you have them all over which is not such a good look. However hair at around your face can look good layered as it 'frames' your face. If you where going to go for it you'd be best to go to a really good stylist... even ask a girl friend for recommendation. And you'd probably want to avoid adding any layers at the back unless you're going for that stlye a lot of girls have here in the UK (which you probably dont want!). It would also depend on how long you hair is I guess for how it would look.
