I am 53, growing my hair out again, Last haircut was in 8/01, with a little trim once since then to try and get rid of the noticeable split ends.
Has anyone else on this board noticed a slow growth rate of
hair once you arrive in your fifties.?
My hair is touching my shoulders, also I have wavy/and some curly hair.
I am thinking that thw waves and curls may weaken the hair
and cause breakage.
Any thoughts on this.?
(Note: years ago when I was in my 20's I had hair halfway down
my back, and the growth rate was good,}

I believe, based on personal experience and my limited knowledge of biology, that hair, nail, and possibly skin growth and regeneration are affected significantly by metabolism and diet. This may sound obvious, but when you think about it we have a decent amount of control over how our bodies perform these functions.
Increased protein, gelatin, and an overall healthy diet really do help hair and nail grown. Also, working out regularly (muscle mass permenantly increases your metabolism, not just when you are excercising like cardio) speed up the rate in which the things you eat are processed and turned to waste. Therefore, diet and excersise largely regulate the amount of growth and quality of hair and nails.
Another thing you can do to promote a more active metabolism are eating lots of small meals throughout the day so the furnace never stops burning instead of starting then stopping then starting with a few larger meals.
This would explain why you are having a slower hair growth rate at 50 something. I think the explaination is as simple as your metabolic rate has slowed which happens naturally with age. Doing any or all of the things I mentioned above will increase your hair growth rate (in addition to the other more important side-effects).
I am under the impression that hair growth rate does indeed slow with age.
I'm in my 40s now. In my teens and 20s, my hair grew very fast. I could get a trim from waist to mid back and be back at waist in no time. In my 30s, I noticed a slower growth rate.
Now in my 40s, I'm almost afraid to cut it shorter. Sure, I get trims and maintain the length where it is, but I won't go any shorter.
I also believe that, in general, terminal length gets shorter with age.
Bear in mind that we are all different. What holds true for some doesn't for others.
wow--- assuming the small pic is representative of what you look like you look nowhere near your 40's.

That's exactly what I look like. I don't always have a beard though. Most of the time I have a goatee.
Thanks for the compliment. It's always nice when someone tells me I don't look like my 41 years.
Attached is another pic.
Mucho gracias, senor!
Any thoughts on this.?
Hi Mike...I have been growing my hair out, again, after many, many years. I think I have reached terminal length at about 14 inches. In the past year, I doubt if my hair has grown more than an inch. I will turn seventy this Fall. I actually like shoulder-length hair. I haven't had any trims for about three years...been growing it out for four years. I have curly/wavy hair and have not noticed any excess breakage.
