Hi i wondered about panten pro v i heard it was bad for your hair?? but it does wonders for my hair ??
Most of the Patene Lines contain agents that can create a build-up on your hair and also dry it out. A sylist once described it to me as Jif (Bathroom Cleaner) for hair. That bad.
The golden rule I was given when looking for a shampoo was to get a brand that was transparent, not creamy in colour. As far as the highstreet brands go this kinda limits you to Clairol or Timote.
I use the green coloured (normal) L'Oreal shampoo, and the same conditioner. Smells wonderful but since my hair is still short I've got no idea if it has any bad long term effects.
Any idea if it does?
None whatsoever - Read the lable see what it contains, if it has any harse detergents like Sodium Laureth Sulphate then these can really dry out your hair.
I agree with sorted...you are quite limited if you don't want to shell out for the organic or salon quality shampoos and conditioners. If you do want to use stuff like Pantene Pro V, just switch it up every few weeks. Speaking with stylists, I've learned that by rotating your non water-soluble shampoos you can avoid buildup (or at least too much buildup of a particular brand).
I think it is much more economical in the long run to just spend the big bucks and get something great that doesn't require setting up a product rotation calendar.
It is even more economical to get the cheap shampoo and douse in thinned vinegar occasionally. Four 99 cent bottles of shampoo and a dollar jug of vinegar would last me a year or more. Hair care can be as expensive or inexpensive as a person feels like putting into it.
Just so happens that there is a bottle of this in our bathroom.... its ingredients break down in order to:
water
sodium laureth sulphate:
medium surfactant (best to avoid if possible, but if you only wash every few days it should be ok)
cocodamide mipa surfactant (dont know strength)
coco-betaine very mild co-surfactant
demithicone:
silicone, as 5th ingred is pretty high probably cause of buildup with poo since the listed surfactants arent suffic to strip it from cuticle. Ggives the poo' nice 'feel' tho I guess...
cetyl alcohol:
mainly used as thickner but it can also act as an emulsifier, it also acts as an emolliant and moisturiser.
hydroxystearyl cetyl ether:
dont know this one off the top of my head but its in kerastase poo and redken smoothdown so im thinking some sort of emulsifier
niacinamide:
vit b3 whats this does for your hair I'll never know plays role in energy release... maybe its for the root?
tocopheryl acetate: a form of vit E... what form I dont know cos it doesnt say! - generic vit E. This is an antioxidant which will prevent free radical damage, but not sure if it will effect your hair much....
sodium cetearyl sulfate:
had to look this one up on the net....Ooo its another surfactant, quite odd to have more vit E/b3 than a a surfactant, so it muct either be very potent or it acts as a co-surfactant im guessing....
DMDM hydantoin: scary preservative that releases formaldehyde!! ok ive found a use for the vit E - to stop the formaldehyde giving you cancer!! chuck this poo!! formadehyde can cause respiratory irritation, and skin irritations, and is a carcinogen. Its probably in this poo cos its mass mass produced and requires a very long shelf life. Salon brands wouldnt have this in....
there are a few other parabens (safer preservatives) down the list but they dont really matter. Looking down the list there isnt really a moisturising ingred - granted this is a poo not cond so that doesnt matter. It will clean your hair to a certain extent but it will deposit a silicone barrier on your hair which it itself cannot remove and combined with the cond' which is probably loaded with silicones its a recipe for major buildup. It may be ok to use in rotation with a clarifyer. The dmdm presense really shows the quality of the poo, its intended for the mass long shelf life, makes it cheaper etc. Possible health concern is the formaldehyde, which granted will be minute quantity but its still there.... but any carcinogenic effects will be counterbalanced by the vit E so dont worry about that... but its still an irritant..... hope that helps!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, pantene is such a yucky product range. I mean the first few times you use it you may think its great. But most drugstore brands (esp pantene) pack their poo's/cond's with way too much silicones and other cheaper chem's which give the illusian of smooth healthy hair. After a few applications these quickly build up on the hair and unless you rotate of clarify the patene wont be able to remove its own residue. The buildup then causes the hair to become dry and nasty looking/feeling. The advantage of salon brands is that they use more expensive but proper moisturising ingredients like oils and shea butter etc. However you'll still find silicones etc in salon brands but in less quantities... usually, with the exception of say redken smooth down/ kerastase products which are packed with silicones to achieve their good effects. I try to avoid cones if i can cos its a viscous cycle to get into, tho I did recently just purchase kerastate masqueintense. Now nothing i've tried before leaves my hair as soft as this, however a quick glance at the ingred list shows why.... but its good I guess for when I go out or my hair has to really look good. For salon alternative i'd go with baby brands like johnsons or something similar. These tend to be cone free or at least low cone content. Tho they still have SLES which makes is probably the worst thing in shampoo! Oe thing to note about silicones is that they are good for coarse hair to give the illusion of smoothness, serums can be good but you'd have to use a clarifying poo every few days and a good intensive conditioner (pref with actually moisturising properties and not cones!!)
What works best for me is the Nioxin line, and hey i get it at the local walmart in the styling salon, it seems to make enough difference in the strength and controlability [sp?] of my hair as it enters that curly big hair stage, sadly my hair tends to grow out before it grows down so it's gonna be a long summer

I had good results too, at first. My hair felt very soft and smooth. Then slowly the ends started to feel, well... crunchy. After ditching the pantene, my hair (all of it) is smooth as silk.
I think it has to do with the silicone ingredients in pantene (any ingredient that ends in -cone). I now stay away from cones.
Sorted did warn me (and others) about pantene, but it was working sooo well for me. For awhile. :-)
Your experience may be different, aparently it must work well for some amount of people.
