I've decided to grow my hair out and would like to hear tips on how to best go about it. I'd like it all to be around shoulder length. The last haircut I had was in April of 99 (not all that long ago). It was basically a boy-regular cut (part-able on the top, very short on the sides and back). I've got a long-way to go but would like to do it the best way I can...
I've heard that if you get a trim every so often, it'll grow faster. How often (if ever??) should I get it cut? How much should I get cut off? Or should I just leave it alone and let it grow, grow ,grow!?
Any tips on going from short-to-long would be appreciated.
Thnaks!
the best way to grow out hair is simply to not get it cut. hair is dead organic matter. the growth occurs in the roots in your scalp. cutting the end of the hair will not stimulate growth. trust me on this one... going to a stylist every month to 'trim the ends' is the surest way to make ZERO progress growing it out.
having said that- your goal is reasonably attainable in a couple years. human hair averages one half inch per month; 2 years growth will yield an average length of 12 inches. not every hair will survive the 2 years- it's quite normal to lose hairs. they get replaced in six months you will likely need a trim for split ends. be sure to spell out to the stylist to trim no more than a half inch. if you have a friend who can cut hair well, you may want to have him or her give you the trim. i have experienced numerous 2-4 inch setbacks because the stylists had to cut the 'dead ends'.
John,
As stylist i would partially agree with your theory..only trim when needed..But a split end is like a crack in a mirror its only going to get worse. If you have 4 inches of split ends then you have 4 inches of split ends you must cut them for the sake of the new growth..The human head loses 80-100 hairs a day..They are like baby teeth though they in most cases are replaced. If you are growing out from a standard mens haircut your road is going to be a long one. 2 trims in the first year would be adequate. For the most part all depending on how well you take care of it. Pantene is not going to give you wonderful hair in 14 days..It will however give you a wax buildup in 14 days. Use good products, keep chemicals off it and you'll be in a ponytail before you know it..
Have a great day
