Well, 6 months of growing, and already my bangs readily fall in my eyes:). Some things I have noticed:
Due to completeing A level coursework, I have had to spend many nights without sleep on my computer to finish by the deadlines, and my hair growth speed has been affected. I was growing at around a healthy 1 inch a month, until about 3 months ago, I had the coursework, and stress has caused my hair not to grow as much. I have always tried to maintain a healthy diet, but not much excersise in that time.
Now that my coursework is finished, i'm enjoying a growth spurt as my hair, within the last week, has as if by magic began to fall in my sight. As my hair has never been this long, it's a bit exciting, lol. I remember thinking about 3 months ago, that it might take something like 9 months or so to reach that goal.
It's 5 1/2 months today I think, or yesterday since last haircut. But my hair is very messy, or awkward. Now I'm starting to experience the dreaded flips you guys going through the awkward stages face every day (mine flips hair at the back, but bangs are straightening), and so, I felt like a new change of clothing and bought a new surf cap (not sure what you call them) its a bit woolie, and grey in colour btw.
I've had compliments from my sister and brother in law, so everything should go ok tomorrow in school, as they havent seen it yet. Also, I'm buying a new pair of trousers baggy style Kangaroo Poo make, to complete my look. I've seen quite a few people with long hair around wear these clothes, and I don't want to miss out on the oppertunity.
My sister, after seeing me, originally very against me growing my hair, went to ASDA to buy some Hair Serum to straighten and tame my waves/curls. I am very happy with my smoothness, but I winced when looking at the ingredients, some contained Dimenthicone, which I try to avoid, but I've been good to my hair for 5 months so I don't think it would do much damage. After following instructions, putting my cap on with the serum dried, my bangs fall even lower, past my eyes easily. Tomorrow, I am going to let my sister straighten my hair using hair iron straightener, it has ceramic plates I'm told. This is only a once off, and I will not be doing this to my hair for a long time, perhaps in August. The reason I am doing all this is because after today, we have revision week, then exams, and this is the chance to impress everyone before we break up untill September. When we start back in september, I'm crossing my fingers for about lip/chin length hair. Any comments, welcome:)
Just a few quick comments.
First - keep in mind we all are very different. What is deadly to one person's hair may not be for another person. I use a straightening iron more often than I probably should, but I've not seen any damage from it. For someone else, it may be the worst thing to do.
Secondly - when it comes to hair products, the same rule applies. What may be great for my hair may be horrible for you.
The thing is to experiment with products until you get the results you want. Once you achieve those results, you're good to go.
Too many people worry about products, damage, etc. Don't sweat it unless and until you see a problem.
Good luck! And as my buddy Treyn says.......
Right or wrong, keep it long!
Sorry but i think that's a bad idea. A body is not a trash can, you can't just throw stuff in there until you see something that obviously breaks. Your hair grows, you know. by doing nothing, hair becomes long. Wasn't that the point?
I would say don't worry about using products/messiness unless and until... the end of times.
This is nothing but my humble opinion of course :)

Congrats. It has been fun to watch the progress of hair growth. I too was surprised as to how short, relatively it took to get hair into my eyes. The business of parting my hair is a pain. Due to its thickness sometimes a down the middle part doesn't work well.
Congrats also on the sister's opinion. I went and visited family over Mother's Day weekend and my younger sister didn't like my longer hair while her husband did. He thought it made me looker "hipper".
Anyway may the summer winds be at your back and not in your face and the hair continue to shine and grow.
