I have straight, waist length black hair. Back in high school when i first started growing my hair, I noticed that the scalp at the back of my head is beginning to show. This was the first time I've noticed it and I was a bit afraid that my hair was thinning out. (Fine hair BUT NOT baldness runs in our family) After a few years, I thought nothing of it, but I got a trim today and I noticed that the patch is still there. Should I be worried about this? I'm a person who experiments with different kinds of shampoos and conditioners. I also wash my hair everyday since it's hot and humid here and it gets oily really fast. Should I just shave off my entire head because of this patch or am I just acting irrational here? ANd also, the patch runs along the same path as the part in my hair which is in the middle. If I should be worried about this, I may have to drastically shave off everything. :(
Don't cut it. Your waist length hair sounds too great to fall to the evils of the (dare I say) scissors & razor.
If the patch hasn't grown in the years since high school, it is probably nothing to worry about. I too have very fine hair with a small "center parting line" area that is thinner than the rest. For me, this has been the same size for almost twenty years, so at 42, I am not worried...yet. Fortunately, my hair is also very light (blonde) so there is not as much contrast between the skin color and the hair as there would be if I had darker hair. To help hide the thinner area I keep my hair parted more from the side and combed towards the back. Almost a "no part" part. (This was a tip from my stylist of 8 years.) Believe me, it looks much better and more full.
Another possibility, especially if you always start your part from the same place, is that you have pulled more hairs from that area as you comb/brush down. Do you have more short or broken hairs there vs. other areas? Just another reason try a different style first.
Before you do anything drastic, ask your stylist for his/her opinion if the spot is growing, as they should know your hair and can offer some options. Of course, this assumes that you have been going to the same person for some time. If not, ask a long time friend or a family member for their honest opinion. Just make sure they are long hair friendly! While you are discussing with your stylist, ask them to try a different parting line or no part at all.
Above all, and before you decide to make the dreaded "cut", be sure to check out all of your options.
Best of luck!

ARE YOU NUTS??????
Maybe you ought to consider getting rid of the middle part. Try pulling the hair above your forehead straight back and clipping the top strands at the back of your head, beyond the balding spot. That way the bald spot will be concealed. Then you can work on restoring the growth without worrying about how you are preceived.
Don't worry about your scalp showing, its a problem i had too. It could be your calac on the back of your head. Just comb over it, that way it might hide it and restore some hair growth. A ponytail is another way to help. The best to comb over it is don't irritate your scalp. DUDE! DON'T EVEN HESITATE ON SHAVING YOUR HEAD! Thats the mistake I made. I had to cut it cause i didn't want anymore undercuts.
Peace out man and keep it ripp'in <:-)____
It's hard to know exactly what you are describing without seeing it. There are kinds of Alopecia which can be treated and manifest themselves as hair loss in discreet areas. More than likely, you are just experiencing male-pattern baldness to a small degree. However, you may wish to do some surfing to research Alopecia, particularly Alopecia areata (I believe I got the name right). If this is what you have and you catch it in time, you can reverse the problem. If it remains untreated, it will become permanent, the way I understand it.
