Picture Purged
When you guys talk about people having naturally layered hair because of growing it out from a very short hairstyle, uh, what's a good time to get a trim to remove this layering?
I'm several months into growing mine out, not from a crewcut, but she did cut it all to about 1 inch, so you could say I had a crewcut + a month growing time. I was trying to part my bangs like wolfeyes does the other day, and I noticed that I sort of have two bangs. See, when I part the real bangs aside, the hair that spouts from the top of my head reaches the top of my forehead, so it looks like more bangs.
I could stand getting a lot lopped off in a few months just for the sake of growing it out "properly", so I just wanted to check the board for peoples' opinions. If you don't think I need a complete trim, should I be doing anything to the sideburn area, I'm sort of getting mutton chops because it's so thick. Do I let this area grow out until I can push it behind my ears?
Thanks,
Keith
oh, the picture is a month old, and you can see it's a little frizzy, it wasn't dry yet.
Hey keith,
I'd advise just letting it all grow til it hits your shoulders, then get a trim if you feel like it... the reasons for this are:
1) Getting a trim this early is hearbreaking - your hair would all be cut back and you'd feel like you lost months of grow-time.
2) Getting a trim during the awkward stage just means it will be awkward for longer. Wait til your hair is more manageable before cutting it at all.
3) If you had all the hair at the same length during the awkward stage... chances are you'd be sporting a bowl-cut.
Anyway. Looks like you've had a good couple of months growth - keep it going, and let us know how things go.

Hello Keith and welcome,
From the looks of the picture, I think you're well on your way. I agree with wolf about not cutting it till it reaches your shoulders, although this may mean you having a mulleted look for a while.(not that it's a bad thing) If your hair on the sides is long enough, just tuck it behind your ears for now.
Hair is genetic so blame your ancestors, LOL. I couldn't tell from the pic if you had a cowlick or not, which would cause your bangs to do weird things. Well that's my two cents anyway. Have a great day.

Ok, no cuts until further notice, I don't want to end up with a bowlcut, nor do I want an extra long awkward stage.
Yep, I've got a cowlick on the right side(left in the pic), it used to be obvious when my bangs were only an inch long, now that they reach my nose (when I pull them down), you can't really tell anymore. It used to be a PITA, and it actually hurt when I wore a hat, the folicles were aimed backwards and the hat was pushing on them. Now that the bangs are a little longer the weight pulls the cowlick down and I think the folicles are reorienting themselves. I've also been blowdrying it and while I do that I flatten the areas that stick out with a comb. If I don't blowdry it, the back flips out to one side and it gets really frizzy. I take showers at night anyways so I kinda half to, don't want to stay up all night waiting for it to dry.
Wolfeyes> What kind of stuff do you put in your hair to get it to stay parted, or does it do that on its own? I've never used gel so I have no clue what's what, but I think I might need some "product" to keep stuff under control for the next few months.
Thanks,
Keith
You've got perfect hair for growing out, its pretty straight and calm, there is NO WAY you should be thinking of a trim, its looking great!
Infact you might be able to grow to shoulder length without needing a trim, seriously keep the siccors away from your barnet. (This is coming from a trim advocate.) :-)
Sorted
I didn't have a good trim until over a year a half of growing. But I do recommend having it done, especially if you want it all one length like I do. I grew it from the typical short style, and the back and sides were much longer than the bangs.
Now the length is nearly even and it looks and feels good, because I know the damage is gone.
Good luck!
