You see, I'm working at McDonald's, and they do not allow long hair... This is a serious problem, because I always have wanted long hair..
I don't know what to do...do you?? I hope you have some tips...
PS. Do you think long hair will fit me?
I'm really impressed about this site - I'm glad to see that so many men loves long hair! :)
We posted your message, Rhodos, but you have a virus that inserts porno links into your bulletin board posts. Please clean up your computer before posting again. AdAware, Norton, and/or McAfee have been reported by other users to do the trick.
Thanks,

They are getting more sophisticated all the time!
Brother.............are they ever the pits! About every 3 days a new one or two attacks me and I have to run my Norton "Antivirus" thing to rid my Computor.
And hardly anyone knows of my address. "Some" apparently come in through Ebay of all places!
Get a firewall.....
I highly reccommend McAfee.
You'd be surprised at the number of "cookies" you get that collect data from your computer jsut from surfing the net. I run AdAware at least daily, and delete dozens of files. Norton is a good fix for viruses. Just don't click on anything online or in email unless you are absolutely certain about the sender. Phoney emails from Ebay are notorious for keystroke viruses. (I really didn't mean to go off topic. I was also posting this in part because I am an AOL user, and I wanting to see if the "floating ban" has gone away yet.)
Thanks so much for the tips. Much appreciated.
Know what you mean there, I checked cookies and temporary internet files folder yesterday, and found over 100,000 files there!!! Cookies I had something like 25,000 and internet files, 82,000 I think!
Just don't click on anything online??? How can anyone use the Internet if you can't click any hyperlink?
Oh, forget the bit about the floating ban. That's a problem on another board.
Unfortunately theres not much you could do being as theres no discrimination laws for hair and such heh. I would suggest to continue working unless it becomes an issue with your management at that point you can decide wether you'd really like to stay there or seek other job opportunitys and give them their 2 week notice and what not. Why would you want to work for an organization which is so narrow minded to begin with although? In the end its your decision.
Actually, that's not entirely true.
I have a good family friend (a laywer) who was able to successfully sue for discrimination based on hair length, and that was 20 or so years ago (when he came back from Vietnam, he worked as a security guard and his boss fired him for shoulder-length hair).
I'd think just the threat of legal action with written backup would be enough to tame any boss' desire to fire you - although if you agreed to keep your hair short as a hiring requirement that could complicate things.
Well the way he had posted it sounds like it had been known or is a regulation. Most stuff like that is presented apon hiring, peircings included which would be the real issue as to wether he could do anything. So yeah good point made.
Actually in most countries of the world today you could sue an employer on grounds of discrimination. In Australia we have inailable common law rights (enshrined by our constitution)which make this practice illegal but they might still try and bluff you out of it. Most countries have anti discrimination laws and if they don't the U.N. do. Do a websearch on laws in your country and find out what your rights are. When you know your rights people are far less likely to force their will on you. Check out www.mcspotlight.org There is some great info on Mcdonalds there. The famous Mclibel trial has just been admitted the European court of human rights, so if you're in Europe and threaten to sue Mcdonalds over human rights I reckon they will think twice as Mc libel has been a real embarrasment to them (yay!!!) One last thing if your store manager is uncooperative go the the regional manager and so on up the ladder. If they know you're serious I don't think you'll have a problem any more
I've been in your job situation. I can see two alternatives: 1) try to negotiate a style, such as hiding it up in a hat, or a tail down your shirt, and 2) look for another job with a long hair friendly company. I don't know about all of them, but my local Walmart has a long hair male at it. Music stores are usually safe for long hair, piercings, visible tattoos, and other "freaky" appearances.
Ya know, I never understood that. McDonald's, a fast food restaurant that caters alot to children and also adults and pays minimum wage applies restrictions on appearance in an attempt to maintain a professional image. Come ON, it's McDonald's, not some 5 star gourmet restaurant with celebrities walking through the door! I just don't understand it. I'm not knocking your job, I'm just saying I don't get the attempt to maintain 'professionalism' in a place with pictures of a red-headed clown everywhere and toys on the counter. Yeesh! If you really want long hair, find a new job. There's lot's out there just as good or better than McDonald's that won't try to control what your appearance. Best of luck to you!
Actually, it fits the pattern. It's always the worst places that discriminate based on appearance. As you move upmarket there is less trouble. Coffee bars, record shops and even bookshops are much less picky about hair length.
I think you would look great with long hair. You should go for it. You only live once, ya know.
I am now employed to work at a Starbucks when I am not away at school. They're very open to long hair from what I can tell. Many employers out there will look past your hair, but unfortunately some will not. You just gotta look.
Good luck!
Long hair will do you well.
I say get a new job. There are many jobs that are not so predgedious.
Welcome, I'm sort of new here myself.
At a Subway restaurant near me there is a dude working there who is the process of growing his hair who wears some type of hairnet, that covers more than just the top of his head, also going a bit further down towards his neck. Maybe this will work.
The time to grow your hair is now if you've always wanted it, since after a year and a half or perhaps a little more, you'll be able to tie it up neatly. I think I will reach that stage myself in December! Best of luck
Well personally, I'd not worry to much about my employer. I'd grow it and see if it becomes a problem. If it does, point to your female coworkers and ask why the rule is different for them.
(OK there are sound reasons why they might be, but I can't imagine that McDonalds Management are likely to be able to come up with any on the fly.)
At the end of the day if crunch comes to it, you might either have to choose between your job or your hair, or you might have to make your employers choose between your hair and you. Problem is McDonalds staff members are expendable and undervalued, so the later is unlikely to happen.
But I'd say grow and see what gives. Long hair almost always suits everyone!
Besides there are always other jobs.
Have you asked why this is unacceptable? What does your dress code book say? Where I work it says that hats are autorized for "alternative hairstyles" so I guess that means long hair is ok as long as you look like a 'man' to the customer. Long hair must = stupid ignorant person who is not fluent in mime. The way I see it is that no one wants to eat food with someones hair in it. The restaurants I have been in the women have their hair tied up so they don't end up shaking off loose hair into the food. Perhaps you can suggest the use of a hair net under the hat. Being that its a rather large chain I figure 'they' may have this rule (or perhaps its just your manager's idea) that you present a good wholesome family friendly image. A happy customer tells his friends. An unhappy customer tells all so they would not only lose business where you work but also at the near by mc donalds and someone would make it a point about the guy with long hair more than the service. (or satanic looking piercings or the convict with all the tattoos...etc) What would you say if you went into a skate place where the associate looked dirtier, sweatier with greasier hair than the kids skating outside in 100 degree sun and its nice and cool inside? Hmm..am I talking to the right person here or is this a customer like me? I get this a lot at stores: excuse me, where's this or that at? (looks around)...Me? YES,you. I'm sorry I don't work here. I guess I just have that look.
Thank you, everyone! I'll keep on growing, and see wether my manager have anything against it or not. If he has, I maybe follow your advices - I think they will work.

Sorry, I accidently replied to your post up above in the 'problems getting a job' post - please have a wee look.

I would say that unless you are planning of making a career out of McDonalds, it's time for a new job.
Does McDonald's have a rule prohibiting long hair on women? If not, then it is gender discrimination.
