What do you like, cut or natural ends? Do you prefer one on females and the other on males? Please explain your preference.
For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about... there are two 'schools of thought' about how to care for the ends of your hair. The 'cut ends' folks get trims and keep the end of their length in some regular pattern (blunt '_', 'U', 'V', etc). The hair stops in one of these patterns and generally appears the same thickness over on the entire length. The 'natural ends' folks don't go for regular trims but instead cut out individual split ends and knots. Natural ends just 'fade out' and get thinner at the bottom of the length and there is less of a pattern.
So which to you prefer and why?
I prefer blunt cuts. They make the ends look so healthy and even. Only a little bit needs to be trimmed infrequently to achieve this.
Hello Stanley,
Here is a different perspective on uncut ends you might consider. I have always seen them as healthy hair. One could take the view that it is the people that can not take care of their hair that need to keep cutting the ends off. ;-)
It is all in how people decide to view things. Trimmed or not is an aesthetic choice more than one of hair quality.

Personally I prefer blunt '_' square accross the back cut, though I like the 'V' cut as well but only on women with hair to mid-back and longer. Not really a fan of natural ends.
I don't know why guess its just personal taste, nor is it a hard and fast preference, its hardly the most important characteristic in judging someone's appearance.

I prefer the natural taper-off that I get at terminal length. My hair falls in spirals, and spirals only look good if they end in tapered tips.
I prefer cut ends...The reason? Well, I just like the look of having fuller and thicker ends rather than having the ends thin out as they grow. It just look neat to me, and gives a thicker look to the hair:)
Blunt cut. I've always loved the look - I've always admired healthy hair and a blunt cut really shows that in my opinion. So I get trims to acheive this look.
I actually really don't like the idea of a ragged end that just tapers away.

Here's my two cents...and I think I am going against the majority on this one.
I'm on the "don't trim" side of the Do trims make your hair grow faster/longer/better? debate. Making this relavent to the topic, I have a respect for people who grow their hair really long. It's what I find attractive (sexually towards women and out of admiration towards men). The look of uneven ends, especially around the waist length or below, tells me that the person means business - he or she wants as long of hair as he or she can get.
This is not to say that I don't prefer the blunt cut for some. I'd lean towards an even length for really light hair or hair that is color-damaged or just in really bad shape.
But other than that, I tend to prefer the uneven look around the bottom, especially on dark, wavy hair. This is what I am growing for.
For hair as curly as yours, this discussion is pointless, because one can TELL if you've trimmed tight curls like yours or not! [grin] My hair was as curly as yours when I first grew it out, and that was the case with me. Not trimming is the better option, of course, because it will save you time and money and it will also give you the most length.
I prefer natural on both men and women. It just seems more natural, like saying that you don't have to screw around with your hair a lot for it to be beautiful.
Tough choice for me to make... I haven't even gotten to the stage wharee i have to decide.
Generally, I like a natural look - having other cuts can look too fashion-conscious... but then there's plenty of people who can pull it off just fine.
I guess it just depends on the person, their hair condition and colour... their build... their clothes... and even their personality.
Hair is as diverse as the people who wear it.

Generally speaking, I prefer "blunt". It looks neater and shows the person cares about their appearance. But it does depend, some hair actually look better with natural ends though it's not very often that I make that observation.
All this coming from a person whose ends are shot, lol
Hello Thomas,
Your argument interests me because it shows how strongly ingrained the message can be that trimming is the only appropriate way to take care of hair. When left alone for years a very orderly taper develops that is quite neat in a different way.
Elizabeth
I would not say "the only appropriate way". I did concede that natural ends CAN look good, but in my experience, 90% of men and 50% of women that I see with long hair, sport ratty ends and I just don't think that looks very nice.
A person can have a bad haircut too so the belief that cutting shows a person cares about the way they look still seems misplaced. I suspect many of those "ratty" ends are on someone that does think well of their look. A lot of time can be devoted to the care of natural ends so it is not a matter of one group cares and the other doesn't in general. Both camps have an equal opportunity for a botched job or jaw dropping gorgeousness.

Good question, Gollan. It's been on my mind lately.
Natural, no trims. Well, for now anyway. I'll try a trim when it gets longer but right now I want length. :-)
hey gollan!
cut ends, IMOP, make your hair look much better...you DON'T have to go every 6-8 weeks as some think...i go about once every 3 months, and that keeps it shaped well and looking healthy.
sometimes, depending on your hair type, "natural ends" as you called them, tend to look unkept, unhealthy, and a little messy. REALIZE i am not saying this about everyone though.
if you are debating on whether to get a little trim or not, i say go for it..WITH the understanding that your stylist will only trim your ends...it is YOUR responsibility to fully communicate that to her/him though...so many feel that stylists don't do a good job and only want to cut cut cut! i disagree. most every stylist i have ever worked with, i have taken the initiative to interview them, let them know upfront, i am NOT a short-haired fan, and once they understand i mean A TRIM if only an inch at most, they do what i ask.

At the risk of sounding like a politician (anyone close to me will assure you I'm not), I prefer a compromise of both. About ten years ago, when I first had long hair (lower back), I found that very, and I do mean very small trims (barely enough to see, and not nearly enough to create a blunt cut) kept split ends and damage away, while preserving the natural look of hair. I owe that one to my good buddy and former hairstylist, Denise. I went without any trimming for two years, had split ends running wild, thought I had reached terminal growth, began trimming, and grew about 5 more inches. I'll swear by this philosohpy, and yes, I am following it again now on my second growth.
I like mine natural as you can see in my photo from the back. It is about 2 inches longer on the right than on the left. Absalom

Natural ends just 'fade out' and get thinner at the bottom of the length and there is less of a pattern.
I'm not a big fan of anything that looks too shaped, and I definitely would never give myself a blunt cut. I haven't had a trim in over a year now and I much prefer the 'straggly' look.
Natural ends just 'fade out' and get thinner at the bottom of the length and there is less of a pattern.
Actually with your hair I'd agree - its perfect the way it is.

Is that your hair??!
.
I love your hair!!!!!!
Resonance, you are definitely my inspiration for letting my hair grow. Looks great! :-)
I am with you 100% on that one Resonance. It looks fabulous!
My best to you as always.

I prefer natural, because it's longest. I also want a long beard to have natural full length, and would like to see more people have long beards.
