ive been growing my hair out for about a year now and i gotta say... it looks like hell! dont get me wrong, its not all bad, when im talking to someone face to face i look gorgeous, nice bangs and an overall good hair length, top that off with a thin mustache and i look like johnny depp in "from hell". as a matter of fact i had no idea of the horror that resides in the back of my head safe from view. oh sure my family told me, but i thought they were all just trying to shake me, i mean, they never did like the idea... that is the one day i was staring at the mirror and noticed something in the corner of my eye(its a 180 degree mirror) when i adjusted my head to get a closer look i could not believe it! looking at my head from both the side and back view it really WAS as bad as they said! from the side, my hair was completely covering my ears and left only my jaw exposed(did NOT look good!) looking a bit past the ears the hair becomes drastically longer and its like i have a 100 degree mullet(around my head, that is) down to my back! and to make things worse the back of my head has that straight combed flat look that does not go good with the shaggy style i have in the front... i dont understand it, my hair length resembled that of tom cruise after the last samurai was filmed(picture is on IMDB.com), but then why does it look this way?
help is welcome... after all thats why i came here! :)
ill try to get a picture in later, but like i said my hair length is similiar to that of tom cruise with the part near the mullet squared off to make the front and back lengths look extremely uneven.
Dude, I'd race to the nearest professional salon and ask for some advice in ways you can wear your hair right now. Don't let them cut anything, of course, but they can really show you some creative ways to make the way your hair is now look the way you want it to look. They can talk with you about styling products that could help as well and, using books of photos, actually show you models with hair like yours. That's what I'd do, man. The pros are my mentors during this long hair process. Josh (in Denver)
Welcome to the board. At one year of growth you are in the worst of the 'awkward stage'. In the transition from short hair to long hair there is no real shortcut through some months of *really bad* hair. If you want long hair the only real solution is to wait it out. In the meantime wear hats and try different brands of gel until you find something that sort of works. Please don't let anyone convince you that you can "tidy it up" or "neaten it" or "shape it" to make your hair look better! This is all just doublespeak for "c*tting" your hair and all c*tting your hair will do is prolong your stay in the awkward stage! The the progress pictures on my website include my awkward stage (especially the 2003 archive). With the pictures there is some information about what products I was using at each stage. I hope that you will see that eventually the awkward stage comes to an end. Hang in there, the result will the worthwhile!
Please hang-in there. You are now in the toughest part of growing-out your hair. 6 more months will make all the difference in the world. 2 years and you are in the "drivers-seat." Just no other way to get there.
Try all kinds of different creations with your hair until you find something that in your mind is "passable" at the moment.
I am sure you will make it. Best thing to do actually is just try and forget about what your hair looks like right now. You have stuck it out this long. If you suddenly decide to have it all cut off you will end up like at least 90% of the other guys who regretted this decision.
It is almost unbelievable, but suddenly the hair will assume a very fine look overnight after enough time goes by.
And also remember: One is usually their own worst critic.
thanks a bunch for the support guys, especially gollan for his progress pics(great hair, btw). ill take all your advice on this and whip out the mouse and gel, tomorrow ill either go to a salon and get some advice or buy one of those fancy fashion magazines and see what i could do to fix the problem.
thanks again guys, you not only made me feel better but also convinced me to stick around the forums and see what i could do to help others.
