I was just reading about how people trim or buzz the straggley hair on the lower neck that never seem to get very long. I was wondering- do you guys shave ur side burns, trim or just leave naturally? If you do cut them how high up do you do it?
And what is "terminal length"?
since my hair is sholder length, my burns run down like 2 inches from my ear lobe, and let them grow, dont shave them, trim it sometimes, and get a nice gotee going \m/ \m/
Well, "side burns" and hair on the back of the neck are two different things, helgast. I keep the back of my neck (and that area near the top of my neck) clean shaven as much as possible, as I hate those scraggly hairs, though I do know another longhair my age who is lucky enough to have those growing along with the rest of his hair, and he even manages to get them into a ponytail. As far as sideburns go, I stay clean shaven on the sides. I don't like sideburns, at least for myself. I think it makes me look... scraggly.
Oh, and terminal length is the maximum length to which a hair will grow before it falls out and is replaced by another hair.

WHAT'S TERMINAL LENGTH?
Terminal length is the maximum length you hair will acheive before its stops growing, this can vary between 30cm and 120 cm (in exceptional cases longer still.) What happens is that after a while (normally several years of growth) a hair folicle will stop growing and eventually just fall out. These hairs are normally replaced by a continuous flow of younger hairs which replace the older hairs as they fall out. Generally a hair folicle has a life span of 5-6 years given an average growth rate of 15 cm per year (6 inches) this leads to a terminal length of 75-90 cm (2.5-3.0 feet).
Your hair is said to have reached terminal length when it appears to have stoped growing. The fact is your hair IS still growing, only the older hair folicles have stopped. People that experience a very short terminal length can normally increase this by improving their diet and living a healthier lifestyle, ie: Cutting out Caffine, Cigarettes, Alcohol and taking more exercise.
Damaged hair can also be more prone to a shorter terminal length, as the older weaker, more damaged hair may suffer from breakage or split ends. This can be reversed by trimming damaged ends and good conditioning treaments.

All hair has terminal length, including hair that is not in your mane. Terminal length for eyebrow hair, for example, is about an inch. No matter what you do, you can't grow 'em any longer.
Realizing how your eyebrows behave makes it easier to understand how your mane behaves. [grin]

Thats SORTED's website, a guy who posts in the site quite frequently =]
I keep my facial hair restricted to my jawline, and trimmed so it looks neat. Used to have sidies but I don't like them that short... so this is the look for me.
