This question is targeted at those who wash their hair infrequently with the intent to maximize growth, but anyone can answer it. I'm growing for maximum length, so I am concerned about washing patterns and what type will help maximize my potential. I've tried cutting my washings back over the past few weeks. I've been washing about every 4/5 days with daily conditioning. I like the results for the most part. I have, however, started getting some dandriff (mostly around my center part). I've always had a scalp prone to having dandriff. If I wash my hair every 1/2 days, I don't have any dandriff at all. It's just when I try to space washings out that the problem begins. I'm using middle-range brands right now (Aveda & Physique) that work great in every area aside from this dandriff issue. I'd hate to have to go to a dandriff-focused shampoo since I am already using a hydrating shampoo that I am dependent on and I've never seen products that mix two special targets together.
Any advice on how to balance infrequent washings with dandriff/dry scalp?
as you wash less frequently your scalp will get back to his natural strength and stop "producing" dandruff, so you're gonna have to though it out for the initial "harder" stage before it gets better.
also, there are many natural cures for dandruff, amongst others apple cider vinegar.
" 8. Dandruff fighter: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar to 3 parts warm water to balance scalp pH and control dandruff. You can also apply undiluted vinegar to the scalp. Allow it to penetrate, then shampoo with a mild shampoo."
use google for more info :)
good luck!

Yep, that works extreamly well for me, I use apple cider vinegar once a week. I reccomend everyone try it out.
My sister told me also that you get more greasy hair and are more prone to dandruff if you wash your hair very often, as the scalp produces more oils quicker to replenish the oil down the drain.
When I first cut back on my washing my scalp would get very itchy and flaky. I've gradually lengthened the interval between shampooings to about five or six days now and the interval between wetting and conditioning to every 3rd day. Rinsing with ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) after shampooing and before conditioning really helps reduce flakes and itching especially if I've been using hair products such as pommade and hairspray. It seems that hair products cause a lot of my flaking and I've been trying to avoid them as much as possible. In the winter I'd break down and use a dandruff shampoo approximately every 4 weeks to stop itching. So far this spring I haven't needed it.
Redleader,
I had a similar problem when I first started cutting back my shampooing. I really liked the shampoo and conditioner I was using, but I couldn't go more than a couple of days without having to shampoo again because of the flakes. I then decided to try an anti-dandruff shampoo called Nizoral. After one application it did the trick for me. I was able to return to my usual shampoo and conditioner and have cut the shampoos down to once or twice a week. Once in a while, if I my scalp feels irritated, I will shampoo with the Nizoral product again. It really did the trick for me because without it I HAD to shampoo every other day at least.
Take care and keep it growin'
