I was wondering, how true are longhair stereotypes?
We've had a number of threads about things longhairs appear to have in common. Music tastes for example seem to be firmly in the Rock and Metal Genres, many of us play a musical instrument, we seem to have a taste for video games, sci-fi, martial arts, fanasty and film. We also seem to be very liberal when it comes to defending civil liberties and our right to freedom of expression.
So where does leave the Long Hair Stereotypes?
EG: The Simpson's "Comic Book Guy" - Overweight, sci-fi freak and all around social lepper.
Or The "Bob Marley" Complete with Dreads and bifter.
The things we have in common seem to make for great stereotyping but the stereotypes we have seem to be a little out of date.
I know that All Generalisations are False, including that one. But what do you guys feel about the Long Hair Stereotypes that are out there?
Do we really have a "Comic Book Guy" on the board?
I agree that the stereotypes are a little out-of-date... but any stereotypes would be considered wrong by those they are meant to represent, as no stereotype will be acurate to a person. I don't know anyone who likes a stereotype that they are pigeon-holed into.
However there are nicer longhaired characters out there -
Stallone in Rambo
Mark Wahlberg in Rockstar
Tom Cruise in MI2 and Last Samurai
Johnny Depp in From Hell, Gilbert Grape, Sleepy Hollow, Blow
Brad Pitt in Interview with a Vampire, Troy, Legends of the Fall
I think longhairs are being drawn more towards the limelight these days (literally, cos the Limelight is a club in Belfast, frequented by longhaired metallers).

I fall into the 'nerd' stereotype quite readily, and in fact willingly with my love for games, computers, sci-fi and fantasy and basically the whole shibang. I like nerds because they aren't out to prove themselves as much as most other guys. On the other hand, I think its important to avoid becoming totally socially inept or sickly and weak and afraid of physical contact so I work out a lot. I even visited "The Mecca" at Venice Beach, CA...the gold's gym where Arnold himself worked out. So does this make me a dumb jock? I also could fall into the peace loving, tree hugging, civil liberties idolizing mold, or the travel addicted wanderlust type.
Personally, I've decided one stereotype is not enough to encompass my interests. I'm sure this is the case with many other people, but perhaps it's the different ingredients we choose to throw into the amalgam of our personalities that defines us. On the other hand, I know many of my pals in the computer science department back at school were surprised when I'd talk about something non-nerd related (almost...betrayed). Please notice 'philosopher' wasn't included on the list above so forgive me of this is trite and obvious.
I think that stereotype is old and drawn out, I hate playing instruments, I like rock but I'm not a hardcore head banger, and I'm not really overweight but I do like anime. Honestly, I like Hip Hop and Pop more than Rock. ~Peace~ Blonde
If you came over to Britain and saw the pop/hip hop scene over here, you'd get tired of it very VERY quickly.
There are a lot of good bands out there who tend to be left alone because of their genre like metal/rock, who aren't manufactured by making cheesy catchy tunes to make the mosy money they can.
Hay Surferdude you come from england well so do i, how cool where abouts are you from ??
I love pop and R&B
I'm from and living in Swansea, South Wales, on the Gower peninsula. We get plenty of surf around here all year round, second to Newquay. Depending on wind direction, a lot of the time we are on par, or slightly better than Croyde and places like that.
I'm generally into most metal, including thrash metal, but I hate bands like Napalm Death, they're not 'thrash', but trash:) IMO
I like a lot of early 90's pop music too, and the odd pop song, after all, I would be boring if all I did was listen to metal!
And surprisingly, I enjoy classical music from composers primarily in the baroque era like Bach, Vivaldi, Handel.
Cya man, and keep growing!
They are as true as YOU want them to be.
