Hi,
I have a somewhat-decent picture of myself that shows my hair as it is without being "styled" into any kind of position. I know my hair is curly, but how tight are the curls likely to turn out? Also, does it look like I am losing hair or are the hairs just too clumped together to cover my head? My hair was very greasy when this photo was taken.
Thanks,
Rick
That picture was a bit larger than I had expected...
If I comb all of my hair down after a shower and leave it there, it manages to stay down in the front, but the curls still seem to dominate in the back. It is currently 4.5 inches in the front and 3.5 in the back.
What am I likely to be seeing in the future?
Here is a smaller version of the picture I posted in my first reply.
Hoorey, lol! That's a good size.
Wow, that was a rather large pic!, my broadband modem almost struggled just then lol. The size of that pic means that 56k'ers will probably never see those pics. Next time try resizing it using bill Choisser's photo resizer... http://www.choisser.com/resize/
About the curls, I think they won't be too bad. But hang in there and it will probably look better than most other hair types, you know that!:)
Oh, I completely didn't think about that! Most people I know online do in fact have broadband connections, so we often exchange large files without giving it much thought at all. So, when I uploaded these images I didn't think about the time that would be required for the downloads. I am uploading with this message a smaller version of the photo since they are almost 1 MB each and cannot be submitted to Bill's utility.
Rick
I'm just thinking of all those poor people who have 56k:)
Have you tried searching into google photo resizer or something, possibly download.com, they've got a few utilities there.
No, but I really should. For this I just used Paint (the only image editing software I have) and skewed the image by 50%. It certainly brought the size down, though.
Hey!
This program is what I use for resizing my pictures, it's freeware:

Rick,
Hey...you've got a very similar hairtype to me. Mine looked like that once. To answer your first question, I do not believe that you are loosing your hair. I can't really see the top/back, but curly hair tends to clump up like that.
Now the other question.....Look at my user pic. I am at 23 months a.k.a. 13"-15". Granted I do have a small head so my hair looks longer....But I'd be willing to bet that in a good year and a half your hair will look as mine does currently. The curl will probably stay tight, but once you hit about 10", it will really begin to fall nicely. I know it's a long hair, and it will no doubt be frustrating, but in the end you will love it. Men will envy your curls and women will swoon over them.
And I started with .5"-2.5". I'm not superman. I thought I should point that out.

Wow...my mind...one track I tell you....
I have always wanted to have straight hair for its added strength, quantity, and of course how it tends to go in one direction instead of getting all caught up in itself. It seems that most of the guys on this forum with long hair have straighter hair and that there are fewer guys with curly hair trying to grow it long, possibly because how difficult it is? I would so much prefer the look of wavy curls rather than perfect cascading curls that are tighter.
The only thing I enjoy about my hair currently is how it can appear to be straighter on the top of my head if I press it down that way after getting it wet. Will the curls tend to prevail as it gets longer?
Redleader,
Your hair looks nice, but I can't help but get envious myself whenever I see someone with straighter hair. I guess it's just what I would prefer to have, even though I don't have it. After researching on the Internet I learned there really isn't much I can do about it, either. So, this leaves me to try to learn to like the hair I have, which is very difficult for me, and hope that it will become easier to like as it gets longer.
One thing I know I definitely wouldn't like is short hair, so cutting it definitely isn't something I've been thinking about. I am more afraid of losing it due to natural causes like MPB than anything else, but even that is a very scary thought that has me worried.
Rick
Rick,
Don't give up. You can have straight hair if you want to. Sure, it is damaging and all, but it can be done.
This is a pic I took ten minutes after I took my user pic.
Just use plenty of straightening balm (I use Physique Brand) and a blowdryer with a comb-through attachment.
Good luck.
Is doing that (presumably) often more or less damaging than the chemical relaxers?
Not entirely sure, but i'd probably say more damaging. Depends on how long you want to grow your hair. Anything longer than chest length will really show the damage. If you want a short "longish" look, then go for it. Look what women do to their hair all the time. Their hair isn't completely destroyed. It would be a lot cheaper, though, and probably work a lot better for curls as tight as yours.
If I wanted to grow hair that was at least shoulder length, would that be possible after having straightened hair? What options would work best for me, particularly those that do not require something be done daily? I've heard there are different kinds of straightening techniques, chemical processes, etc. but don't really know about the differences between them.
Even if any of the procedeures is damaging to the hair, I'd want to be sure that my scalp/future hair would not be affected. Thought maybe it would be a better thing to try now that I've only been letting my hair grow for a couple of months?
Would this be advisable if I am really dissatisfied with my hair?
Hi Rick
You've naturally got pretty curly hair and that's likely to prevail as your hair gets longer, your hair won't magically become straighter.
What you might find is (like me, Resident "wavy hair") that your hair is pulled straighter nearer the roots and curls more towards the ends, but you are always going to have curly hair. Straightening Irons might offer a temporary change but, as soon as you wet your hair your going to be right back to curls.
Also I don't think you're loosing your hair, the only point where I can see scalp is where your curls seemed to have clumbed together to cause a "part", though a picture of your crown and the top of your head would help us say for certain.
Hope that helps
Sorted
Sorted,
I have uploaded the pictures you have requested. Some of the image quality is due to the camera I used. Have I already lost some hair in the front or is that normal for my forehead? I never paid much attention to it before now. Maybe it would help to see the other pictures I have uploaded as well?
Thanks,
Rick
