Picture Purged
I was going through some photos from just over a year ago and took notice of just how much my hair has deteriorated since. I've been really brutal and neglegant with it the past year in terms of the way I brush it when it's wet etc. I have noticed that it really hadn't seemed to be growing any longer lately but failed to take notice of just how frail my ends had gotten until I looked at those pictures and saw how full they used to be. My hair looks just as long, if not, longer in the pictures of me over a year ago than it looks now.
What'd I'd like to know, is what are the best ways to go about restoring my hair without sacrificing a noticeable length. I know it's gonna take time but I'm willing to do it because I want to continue growing it longer. I've provided some before and after pictures for comparisons sake. The first two are from last year, the 3rd is from several months ago.
Take Note: My hair does look slightly better now than it did in the provided after picture due to having 2 inches trimmed off but it still leaves a lot to be desired in comparison to the before shots. My hair was so shot, I couldn't even notice that 2 inches were missing!
So far, I've bought myself a good brush and am trying some conditioners that supposedely will help and I'm alot more careful in not brusing straight through and ripping through tangles. What more can I do?
Thanks
Dude, you ought to see a professional at a salon. Make sure they hide the scissors though. But they deal with these things all the time and can probably recommend some great products, including vitamins, that might restore or at least strengthen your hair. It's awesome hair, man. Just like I make sure I get a quality service tech to work on my car, I make sure I have a quality hair professional take care of my growing hair. I've read a lot of the homemade things guys on this Hyperboard do to save their hair, and some things seem to work a little while, but over all, the basic message I keep seeing on this Board is to see a pro if you have trouble. Go for it man. It's worth keeping your awesome hair. Josh (in Denver)

The folks there are really good with advice and are friendly to.
It sounds like you basically know what you need to do (ie NOT do) to restore your hair's condition.
Some coconut oil on the ends will prevent tangles but I don't think you can 'repair' them as such. I'd suggest regular trims of say, 1 inch every three months, until the damaged parts have been cut out and your hair regrown.
Your hair looks awesome, it is healthy on top and you've got great length. Make sure you keep it dude!
Thanks, I plan on keeping it and want to grow it much longer if I can. Maybe liek 3/4 of a way down my back.
I forgot to mention that I went 8 months without a trim! on top of being brutal with it and *gasp* I was guilty of subjecting my hair to the torture of a straightening iron for several months as well. Not every day but maybe once to twice a week to keep my hair more docile. Needless to say, I gave the straightening iron away. It was addictive.
Long hair needs extra care. You need to be gentle to prevent further damage. To remove tangles always start at the ends and work your way up. A wide tooth comb may be a better choice than a brush and even when using a wide tooth comb do not comb your hair when it is wet. (Only curly hair should be combed when wet.) If you start today taking better care of your hair you will probably not have to trim any more length off, thus preserving the length you already have. Over time your hair should fill in with new growth and get longer as well. It may take a year or two but it is worth it, don't give up hope. Absalom
JK first thing is not to panic, your hair is a great length so you still have plently to work with, even if the worst happens and you need to trim another couple of inches, its not like its gonna push you back to square one or anything. :-)
I don't know what products your using, hopefully a decent shampoo and conditoner, try a leave in conditioner as well, it'll help when combing and prevent any further damage.
Infact, trimming an inch every 6 months probably wouldn't be a bad idea because it would gradually even your ends, whilst still allowing you net growth (assuming you haven't reached terminal length.) This will make your hair look fuller and heathier at the tips. Much like the pic posted by Dick.
Hope that helps
