Had long hair from my teens, never sure what to do with it and still not sure now! Having said that, I pretty much ignored the back which was a lot shorter and graduated when I started growing it out, so during the awkward phase it probably looked worse than for people who start with a shorter, more even cut. Eventually got down to my shoulders though, and I kept it long from then on until the last year or so, varying the length from below my shoulders to collar length without a fringe. Nothing wrong with layers: just don't have too many different layers, or too short layers and things should be fine if you have straight or wavy hair between chin and shoulder length. Obviously have to have them freshened up ... Very indecisive, though I should go shorter so got a razored hairstyle last year which I kind of liked, but it was an odd combination of longer than I wanted and shorter than I wanted: almost a mullet. Got a "proper" short hairstyle now (with a short back) and don't know what to do really. Found long hair A LOT easier to deal with and as I am an essentially clueless person the casual harrassment by strangers and personal nagging about the same. Some people are never satisfied!
Family were mixed on my hair when it was long and mixed on it now really. My father prefers it short, even though he had a proper long haired phase in the seventies, and he was even skinnier than me and looked pretty cute for a girl ... Maybe that's why. As I wear specs I have gone from, "Look, that Wayne's World bloke" to "Look - Harry Potter!" which is not a particularly fortunate outcome. My good friend Carmel wants me to grow it again but I want to avoid a "mullet" phase. Actually she understands pretty well as she has been growing out a short layered haircut over the last year, and has NOT had any trims but she does have hyper-silky fine hair that does not tend to split, whereas I have wavy medium hair that splits at the first sign of trouble ... Would love to highlight or color it too but probably dry it, leaving it more prone to splitting. Also monetary restriction. My hair is light brown and theoretically should be able to get away with using a high-lift tint, but all the stuff on the market seems to be either heavy-duty lightener or fairly weak dyes for people with dark blond hair. And I am so cack-handed am sure it would all go horribly wrong ...
... or you could just forget the idea of coloring, and grow it as long as possible. :)
Na, do what you want. Coloring's not my thing.

Hi JC.
Its Friday PM - My Brain isn't really in gear. So I haven't really absorbed all of your post.
I take from your message that you want to grow your hair back, but you want to make it a little more interesting than it was before. IE: Highlights or colouring?
Hell why not? Go for it, but get it done by a professional, I know it can be expensive, but its a lot cheaper than putting things right if your DIY efforts go wrong.
