    First, I'm brand new to this site. I chanced upon it while doing an AltaVista search for "Long Hair" sites. But, I have to say, this site is ABSOLUTELY *FANTASTIC*! I've already "Favorites"ized it, and have spent the better part of about 2 hours reading a good deal of the messages that've already been posted on this board.
    Words can't and will probably never be able to describe how incredibly wonderful it is to actually know that a site exists that is dedicated to men who have/want and love long hair (even women). I'm 25, have been growing my hair for about 7 years now, and I get the usual mix of compliments/criticisms from the general public, but I stopped caring years ago. My mother has had the most difficulty adjusting to the length, especially considering that she grew up in a house in which she and her other 6 siblings were taught that long hair on a man was usually an indication that he was gay. But, she's never stopped loving and accepting the person I am, and for that I'm greatful. And, I love her.
    My wife adores it, and wishes she had my hair folicals(sp?) (grin). It has been colored a couple of times, but I'm never doing that again. Right now, in sunlight, it looks a firey shade of red, and a light shade of brown when I'm in the shade or inside.
    I've got just a few inches to go before it reaches my hips. My goal is to grow it to my butt and stop there. I had it permed in a lose spiral curl (akin to Nicole Kidman's look from "Days of Thunder") when it was just past my shoulders. It's grown out, since, and it's produced a beautiful effect in that my hair is straight until it gets to mid-growth and assumes what curls there are left.
    Styles I've worn it in include: completely lose, a pony tail, French braid, pony-tail with a braid in the tail, top half pony-tailed with the rest hanging lose, and a braid on either side of my head (similar to Mel Gibson's character's braids in "Braveheart"). I also, on occasion, wear a black ribbon I bought at a crafts shop (I forget what material it's made out of). My reason for this is that I feel the ribbon-in-the-pony tail look was too flattering on men (to die out) in the days when they wore wigs to go with them, so I decided to bring the style back in my own unque way (sans the wig). I've had strange looks from some people when I wear a ribbon, but, as a I said before, I just don't care anymore. If they don't like it, they don't have to assume the style themselves, and they don't have to stare. I do, however, receive some positive feedback regarding the look. Either way, the only person I wear the ribbon for is me. I like it, my wife likes it, and that's all that matters. I'm not boastful or egotistical about how my hair looks. I just love it. If others think it looks good, great, and I'm extremely thankful for any compliments. If they don't like it, and voice an opinion, oh well.
    When asked why I grew it out, it's because I wanted to. Simple as that. I was tired of short hair, and felt cheated out of the fact that the social norm was to allow women to wear their hair any length they chose, and "deny" men the same freedom we had before shorter hair became the expectation. I love the way it feels, and I love the way it looks. I've also got high cheek bones, so my hair has a way of making my features look softer when I wear it down.
    I got it cut once, when I was still in High School, while job searching, and the day of the cut wound up being the most depressing day of my life. I vowed that if I ever decided to grow it out again, I would never cut it unless I had absolutely no choice but to. Thanfully, the jobs I've had since then have had open enough dress codes that I've never had to cut it. I currently work in a credit office, and I've never had a complaint about my hair, yet. My goal is to keep the job long enough until I'm able to acheive enough of a status as a professional writer to be able to stay at home and write full time (I have yet to be published, mind you).

    Anyway, I realize this message has been rather lengthy, but this site is just too wonderful to've wanted to keep any introduction of myself very brief. You can definately expect repeat visits from me, and I look very forward to chatting with everyone here, as well as on IRC (I've already made note of the server and IRC channel, Vic. Thanks!).

    Hi! i think you look great in that picture, i even think that i've seen you in a film, i don't remember which, perhaps as an extra. Your hair colour is also great, keep it that way. I think i would like to grow it that long, someday perhaps, i'll take that step.If you're growing it down to your butt, just be careful not to get it tangled with something. I wish you good luck in your further hair growth, although i think it fits you great as you look in the picture

      Thanks, again. I rather like it. It provides, I think, a very nice contrast to compliment the color it looks when I'm not in the sun.

      Two things are required, above all else, to grow hair as long as mine - patience, and perserverence; especially if you're starting out with very short hair. As you're growing it, the hair gets to a certain length where it starts getting to be a nuisance more than something to be liked. Usually, chin-length hair is the stage at which this occurs, and if you can make it past that point, you're home free. What I did to get through it was, until my hair got to a point where it would behave, I would wet it back and hair-spray it so heavily that my hair felt like straw. I looked geeky as all get-out (my closest friends often called me "helmet head" during this time in my life - hehe), but it worked. What was funny, though, was that, initially I was going for the "John Conner" look from Terminator 2. What happened with me is that, once I got to that point, I found myself becoming more and more addicted with the idea of having longer hair, and I just let it grow out from there. Something that I think happens with a lot of people (guys, at least), is that, the longer the hair gets, the longer you want to let it grow out. You just want to keep going, and you end up finding yourself faced with the decision of knowing when you want to stop. Personally, I'd LIKE to let it get down to my butt, but I may just stop at my hips. Otherwise, I have a feeling my hair will wind up becoming a predominent feature and take away any attention the rest of my face might get.

      If and when you decide to, I wish you the best of luck. It certainly feels exhilirating, particularly when I'm mowing my lawn and am not wearing a shirt. Next to sex and my wife's back rubs (grin), there's nothing quite like the feeling of my hair against my bare back.
