I can't decide whether to trim my hair or not. It is not quite to shoulder length in the back and the front falls to my upper lip. I had my last trim in early May (it is now late August). My stylist, whom I trust, told me then to come back in 6-8 weeks to trim the ends. I like the length, but have been told that hair grows faster and looks neater when it is trimmed regularly. Does anyone have any advice?
Looks Neater - Maybe. Grows Faster - Not! If you want to maximize length, I wouldn't trim anything but about 1/2 inch every 6 months or so. If your hair has a lot of split ends after awhile, you can use a method of trimming only the split ends off of each hair that has a split end on it. (Takes lots of time) Good diet and general good health combined with a combination of vitamins and trace minerals that hair needs to grow properly DOES maximize hair growth. Trimming the hair every 6 to 8 weeks DOES NOT make it grow faster. (But your hair stylist will be making a good living):).

look at your hair- if it isn't too scraggly then don't get it trimmed. it will NOT grow faster from being trimmed... hair is non-living tissue. cutting the ends will not affect the growth rate whatsoever.
Thanks for the advice. My hair looks really nice (or so my wife tells me), so I'll put off the trim for another couple of months or so. I really like the length, and didn't want to lose any.
The whole hair-grows-faster-if-you-trim-it thing never really made sense to me anyway. Thanks for clarifying. I guess the stylists telling us that is like the lawn mowing crew that advises a mow every week whether the grass is growing or not:-)...They gotta pay the bills.
Your hair probably won't grow that much faster with a trim. I get my hair trimed every 5 weeks just to take care of split ends and clean up the hair around my face (sideburns, etc.). For me it is definitely worthwhile and noticeable. I suggest that before your next trim take a good look at your hair in the mirror as to how you have your hair styled and then look at the ends of your hair for damage. Do this again after your trim and note wheher the trim made a noticeable impact or not.
Good Luck
