I was recently asked by a friend exactly why I love long-haired men, and it got me questioning myself. However, I did find it interesting that even in the media (advertising, film and especially cartoons ! ) that the most desirable / the hero of the piece generally has long hair. One particularly interesting film is 'The Lion King' which contains numerous scenes of Simba sashaying around flipping his mane in a very seductive manner. Now Lions don't tend to watch cartoons much, so my guess is that this is an appeal to the 'human female' audience. Considering that 90% of males have short hair, it is strange that all which is attractive and desirable in the 'media' male, is centered around those with long hair. I'd like to do a thesis on this. Ok, bored ya all to death now .... GREAT SITE btw :)
Actually the idea of the hair as a 'mane' fascinates me. I am in the process of writing an essay that hopes to address the question of why *I* have long hair. In it I talk a bit about other animals with long manes. I agree that 'heroic' males are often portrayed with longer hair. It makes you wonder why society still places a premium on being 'clean cut'.

William the Lion Hearted: you're missing an ear. Did you get in a fight with Scar or Simba or Leo? Cool costume nonetheless :-)
Naw...One of the sections of mane from the back was caught on the ear and covering it up. It was dress rehearsal so I did not yet have the hang of getting the costume on
Longhaired men have most likely settled upon that term because there is no other word in English for one's scalp hair, as contrasted to one's facial hair. Only longhaired men have a substantial need to talk about both while making a distinction between the two. The word "hair" did not work well because both one's mane and one's beard are "hair".
