Well, my hair's been growing for about a year and 2 3rds now, but I'm starting to get really annoyed at it. I like having shoulder-length hair, but because I'm part-black my hair's obviously very curly/kinky and near the scalp it's an absolute disaster, with the roots all matting/dreading themselves up. I now have a load of dreadlocks which have formed naturally, which look OK, but I'm just worried that any future hair growth will just add to these huge matted lumps near my scalp rather than becoming new 'longer' looking hair. I can't recover it with a haircut as it will all have to be buzzed if I choose to cut it in any way, so tight are the dreaded bits. Because it's so curly it's been impossible to comb for ages, too, meaning that I can only finger comb it, which probably means that all those tangles have just built up for a while. Whilst it's nice to think that my hair's very 'natural' I was hoping for hair like Kirk Hammett or Shane Embury rather than bloody dreadlocks. Also, I'm not convinced that it's growing much longer anymore...seems to have slowed right down, again maybe down to all this dreading.
I can't face cutting it all off and starting over, though...tried to grow three times now, and if I cut it I don't think I can face the awkwardness of it all again...maybe I just wasn't meant to have long hair.
In any case, anyone know if it's possible to undo dreads at all, or is it really too late for my hair now?
just accept it!
i don't think you can undo it if it's as tight as you say, and even then, why hurt your hair with combs/conditioner to remove the locks you were gifted? :)
it will seem to grow slower because of the tightening process, but don't worry. just take that as a sign that you should look at your hair less.
the only thing you should consider doing is separating the dreads if you don't want them to develop into one huge congo on the back of your head. or let it happen.
good luck whatever path you choose!
