Well, it's been a month today since I dreadlocked my hair. It is simply amazing the difference that I can feel in the locks. The first time I washed my dreadlocks (a week after putting them in) they wouldn't hold water at all, as loose as they were. They felt real spongy and springy, and now are more solid and have real substance. There's still a bit of fuzz, but the locks are much more well defined than it looks like in the photo. I have chosen to stay away from wax for the most part, since part of my reason for locking up was to "go natural"; but they are maturing very nicely.
It also seems like dreadlocks polarize people's comments and views. I don't have lots of "oh yeah. . .that's ok" kind of comments. They're either "OMG That is disgusting!!!" or "OMG! That is SO AWESOME!" go figure. .. . .
I have had one person call me a "ras thieve" and one who gave me an offensive gesture that was a between the "S.O.B" gesture(forearm slap) with the finger.
My gf loves them, and is always ready to help with rolling them to help them tighten up!
Anyways, I'm really loving them and enjoying the process! Congratulations on all of your progress, guys. Keep up the good patience!

Thanks! :)
Hehe looks class, a teacher at my college has dreads down to like the top oh his legs. lol
Looks real nice.
Dreadlocks aren't really something I'd do, personally, but they're still pretty damn cool.
I wasn't sure how I felt about them at first (not that it made a difference, of course). But now I like them. I must say they are distinctive and I can understand why people don't ride the fence in their opinions. A friend of mine has had them since I've known him (a few years) so I expect him to have them. But de novo is a different story.
Keep them going and happy. :-)

That "Ball" Guy, excellent dreadlocks! With no wax they probably look clean up close. I think some of the hostility that you are getting is due to the public misperception that dreadslocks are dirty. Similar to people associating long hair with hobos and homeless in my town. We all suffer for the poor hygiene habits of a few unwashed longhairs. I'm glad you decided to go for the natural look. It is a great style for you. I am amazed you got your hair to lock so well. Thanks for the update.
Wow, thanks for the comments! I think you are correct in your assertation about the hostility. I can't stand the smell of "scalp funk" so I wash my dreads twice a week!
I have to admit that I don't understand or like dreadlocks. To me it looks like ratted hair that even looks painful. I think you looked much better with your curly hair. As a matter of fact, I generally don't think that curly or frizzy hair looks good on a guy when it's long. But with your curly and silky hair it was very attractive. You were an example of how good someone can look with longer curly hair...I'm sorry that's gone. But you seem to be happy with the dreads, as do others. I guess I'm gonna have to open my horizons and try to find them attractive. Any help here would be appreciated.

Lol, I know what you mean, but I realized how much work and effort and money (conditioner, plus 3-minute miracle) I was having to spend in order to get that "just right" look, and I realized how much I was fighting nature. lol, my hair was naturally starting to dread up without me doing anything so I decided to just go with the flow and at least make the hair mat up into nice ropes instead of one big plop like some (stereotypical) homeless person.
Wow, I think it looks totally gnarly! Awesome! Keep us updated!
PS Are you the only guy on these boards with dreads?
Thanks man. Yeah, I do believe I am the only dreadhead on this board. There was someone else who used to have them but cut them.
Dreads aren't for everybody...............but they sure fit you perfectly and look super great! It is easy to see why you are so happy with them. I would be the same way.
Wow, their looking awesome with you! They definately look better than when you had curly hair.
How often do you wash your dreads?
Twice a week, plain bar soap.
Looks great. Nice dreads parting to the sides. Did anyone tell you that you look like that guy from BASEketball? Heehee

I think your hair looks great in dreads. You had the perfect hair to do it with. I have to admit that I'm pro wax though. I did some dreads on a friend of mine who's hair was more wavy and less kinky than yours. The beeswax is natural and washes out over time w/ hot water. It helped a lot during the beginning stage and it has a nice smell to it. Anyway, you're doing great w/o it and mother nature has given you enough nap to knot.
