Last night Dell had its annual company-wide event. One of the repeated themes of the even was the hair of Mort Topfer (vice chairman). Playful pictures from the 21st century giving views of what the company would be like in the future showed other officers imitating Mort's long hair style.
I tried to find a good picture of him, but I didn't find one that shows his hair well. I did find these quotes, though from IT News.
"'Yes, I have got very long hair for someone in the computer industry, but my wife is English and she likes me to be continental.' - Mort Topfer, Dell Computer Corporation vice-chairman. He was visiting New Zealand last week.
"'I don't think I will wear a pony tail, not until I retire that is, and that is a long way off.' - Mr Topfer who is 61, again, on hair. "
That was interesting. Is his hair long enough to do a pony-tail. It didn't look like it from the posted pic. Secondly, I foundit weird that he thought his hair was long for some fellow in the COMPUTER industry - GeeZ!!!! Now if he said law or accounting, maybe I'd agree. Opinions?
I'm not sure how old that picture is. Yes, I believe his hair is long enough for a pony tail. Regarding the computer remark, I'll bet his remark was significantly massaged by a writer and editor. I've found from personal experience that frequently what you see in print bears little resemblance to what someone said.

His hair is sort of shoulder length and I guess that remark applies to somebody in the computer industry who is high up and of his age group, since there are many longhairs in the computer industry among the younger staff, especially the people behind the scenes.
Some I can think of include Dan Farmer who developed the SATAN program, that Japanese computer security expert who caught Mitnick, former Sun Microsystems Java Evangelist Miko Matsumara (who has since cut his lovely long flowing locks) after joining Biztone.com and I was recently told by a technical person with the German software company SAP that half the Linux developers he knows in Germany have long hair.

Don't forget the dudes at ID Software, you know the Quake guys. There are/were at two longhairs last time I checked. Or should I call them Artists?

I have somewhere a documentary on computer security videotaped from the Discovery channel. It contains mainly interviews with several computer security experts - all suits with neckties and short haircuts, except for the longhaired Dan Farmer, who is wearing a black polo shirt with the sleeves cut off...
