Sup all, Ive been using head and shoulders for a while, but it tends to dry my hair out. So I was wondering what are some good mild shampoos that wont dry hair out?
Thanks in advance
Timotee is a popular mild brand in the UK dunno if you can get it out on the other side of the pond.
Generally speaking though you want to switch to shampoos and conditioners that don't contain the harsh chemicals found in the likes of Head and Shoulders. Only I'm terrible at remembering which are the bad ones: Larreths? Lauryls? Alchols???
Someone else may be able to clear that up.
Ammonium Lauryel Sulfate is one of the harshest chemicals for your hair. If you can try to find shamppos labled with Sodium Lauryel Sulfate or better yet no sulfates. Don't use any shampoo on a regular basis with Ammonium Lauryel Sulfate that is a harsh cleasning angent.
Thanks Kenneth...
I can always remember the Ammonium = Bad. But which is worst?
Sodium Laureth Sulphate or Sodium Lauryl Sulphate?
I have one Shampoo which has just one of these ingredients (Redken) which feels milder and another (which I alternate with to reduce build-up) which contains both - Clairol Herbal Essences.
I believe the Laureth is better foaming agent.
That said I know both are carsinogenic (sp) so as you say its better without either - but show me a shampoo that doesn't contain them - I can't find in the supermarkets or salons.

If you go to a natural food store/market there are tons of shampoos and conditioners that do not contain these chemicals. But it really does boil down to what works with you the best.
HEad and shoulders also has two forms of Alchohol in its ingrediants. Alchohol for hair = BAD
Correct me if I'm wrong isn't all types of Alcholol bad for your hair.
The most Stupid Thing I have seen is those head and shoulders advertisements where they target women with long hair. I hope no women are stupid enough to fall for head and shoulder's lies. Long Hair has no place with head and shoulders.
Sodium Lauryl is gonna be the worse of the two. The order, from worst to best would be:
Ammonium Lauryl
Ammonium Laureth
Sodium Lauryl
Sodium Laureth
Or at least, that's what I've heard. I'm not any kind of expert about it.
Your "sulfate" list is correct. I would add that Cocamide Betaine is even milder than Sodium Laureth Sulfate and is the foaming agent in some "natural" shampoos, as well as baby shampoo. Be careful with baby shampoo, though, the pH is altered so as not to irritate eyes, but makes it more drying to hair.
Also, as another point of fact, none of the detergents are proven to be carcinogenic, that is an urban myth, check out Snopes.com to get the explanation. http://snopes.com/toxins/shampoo.htm
The whole snopes.com site is a good one to check for the real story behind many of those types of rumors and email scams.
Thanks Mary, I hadn't realised that claim had been debunkt... thanks for posting the link it was a real eye opener.
No that you mention it the rumour sounds like it was circulated to promote "Naturals" Products on MLM sites like neways.com.
Great I feel much better about my product choices now.

Whoaa, hair as magnificent as yours doesn't deserve to go anywhere near that horrible stuff! I think aussie is mild.
He already used Aussie but had a reaction to it on his scalp which I had for a while to.
Thanks Nige for that, I didn't realize. I use aussie moist and so far I haven't found any irritation, it just affects different people in different ways I guess.
I switched to it a ways back as well and had some irritation on my scalp around the same time DoomLord did but it cleared up pretty quick and im happy with the results from the shampoo and conditionar now.
Yup, what I ended up doing is using another conditioner for most of my hair, then the aussie on just the tips, that seemed to work.
Now to just find a good mild shampoo, I thought herbal essence was supposed to be a really natural one, but now I dont know.
I used herbal essence before switching to ozzy it has a good smelling shampoo but dryed my hair out. Although I think they have specific types for dry hair and such I just didnt want to try them all out.
Dear Doomlord,
After hearing rave reviews on other long hair boards I have tried and found Nature's Gate shampoos to be gentle and effective without being drying. The chamomile one is my current favorite and supposedly does something for shine too.
