Throughout this summer, I plan on going to the beach a lot on the days I'm not working. Summer is the happy hour for my hair b/c it grows at an unbelievable rate and when it comes to the beach comes swimming. Does the salt in the salt water have any affect on hair other than making it tangled and sticky when drying?
Comments and ideas are more than welcome

Tangles the hair like hell and also the sun rips the end mercilessly.
Use a cap.
The salt water is good for helping dreadlocks mature.
yes, salt water will lead to breakage which acccelerates knots => accelerate locking up.
However, if you get your hair too dry your locks will COMPLETELY break and fall out

for some reason thats less of a problem with ocean water (as usual, what's sitting there in nature is better than whatever we can come up with)
my comment was more directed towards locking accelerators/people putting salty water in their hair

The first time I ever grew my hair out, I went to the beach and just played in the surf with it all loose. I'll always remember not being able to comb it out in a reasonable ammount of time, and going out to eat with it all wild, wet, and tangled. Finally getting it back in order took quite some effort, but there was no lasting damage. I can't imagine it would hold up well if you went to the beach and did that on a regular basis.
The next time I went, I was more careful to periodicly dive under the waves and let it flow back. Afterwords, it was no more difficult to handle than coming out of the shower.
Of course, YMMV according to hair type and other random factors.
