what are some really good dandruff shampoos? i got myself a dandruff problem, and i want something that will leave my hair silky smooth but also get rid of the dandruff at the same time.
also will dandruff make you go bald? and i also heard vinegar is good for getting rid of dandruff.
The vinegar rinse works well in keeping dandruff away by returning your scalp to its proper pH level, I think to alkaline/acidic and you get problems. If you do the vinegar rinse once/twice a week, every week, I think it should clear up with you. I used to have major dandruff when my hair was really short, growing it is the best thing I ever did, I don't have to look at myself in the mirror anymore and feel awful about the way I look:). I used Nizorel for dandruff, recommended by my barber, and Alphosyl 2 in 1, I had that on perscription, very strong anti-dandruff shampoo.
so water with vinegar right, and substitute it in for shampoo? and use conditioner afterwards right?
I've been shampooing, 2 or 3 times a week, followed by the vinegar rinse (1 or 2 times per week), then conditioner. I'm not sure what exactly is recommended, I've been trying it out slowly.
Shampoo, then vinegar, then conditioner. I suggest Apple Cider Vinegar. I dilute mine 50/50 with water. I have heard other people using a much, much weaker dilution (i.e. a few tablespoons to a quart of water). Regular use of vinegar (every 2nd or 3rd wash) has *almost* eliminated my use of dandruff shampoo (I'm down to once every three months or so). Good luck!
one more question, will dandruff make you go bald? my dad keeps telling me it will and is worried that i shouldn't grow my hair anymore.
im gonna try it tomarrow, hopefully it doesn't mess up my hair.
Here's my method: apply distilled vinegar to the scalp with a medicine dropper. Afterwards, shampoo as usual. Repeat every 1-2 months.
If the dandruff is bad, see a doctor.

not "ordinary" empty vinegar, but apple cider vinegar will work, yes. And the "commercial" dandruff shampoos are so harsh you REALLY want to try out a natural solution first.
i posted instructions a while back, it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I know I may get criticism from many, but I've been using Head and Shoulders Smooth & Silky. I use it daily and my hair is the nicest it has ever been. I have a very oily scalp, but this shampoo does the trick without having to mess with salad dressing ingredients. Anyone else have success with this? Anyone at least tried this new version before slamming it?
As a reformed Head and Shoulders user I will point out that washing your hair every day with such a harsh shampoo could actually *cause* oily scalp. Everyone is different so your oily scalp could be from some other cause but still, if it is the shampoo it is a hard cycle to break because your scalp takes time to adjust so it will be oily and itchy for a few days/weeks after you cut down or switch shampoos. How long is your hair?
I agree with Gollan, when I started posting here in January, I suffered from a very dry scalp, which hardly used to get oily, that was because I had never given my hair a second though, not bothering to wash it often. I started washing, after discovering this forum, everyday to see the results. That dried my hair out badly, but after washing it twice a week, every week, my hair is always oily, save 1 day after washing. I believe it is the number of washings, if you cut them down and let your scalp understand that you don't need extra sebum, it will back off a bit. I'm now aiming to shampoo every 7 days, trying to train my hair.
Good luck!
Hey Surferdude
Just as an aside about this washing bit. In my case, in the beginning stages I washed every other day also...........oily scalp and all. But now that my hair is 12-1/2" it only "needs" washing once a week. I have noticed for many months the same reaction. The 1st day it is washed (and conditioned) it looks great. It is the "2nd day" that is the bad one...........not enough oil in the hair and seems much too dry. (Why this isn't noticed the 1st day eludes me!) Anyway, by the 3rd day and for the rest of the week with combings to bring the natural oils down to the tip ends all looks quite well. Your hair has a way to go yet in length, but even so looks terrific right now. You just might want to "experiment" and see how many days you can go before ea. shampoo at your present length. My "gut feeling," (and it is only that) is that you can go 4 days at present. But who knows? In my case I started the weekly routine when my hair reached 6." Funny, but the longer it gets the less shampoos it seems to need.

Thanks Justin! before I discovered this website, I know this is gross thought, but I'd be lucky to shampoo (never condition) my hair at all in one month! It wasn't just about being lazy, I loved shampooing my hair, but I never did it very often, and I didn't need it. So I guess, at short hair, the longest I could go is a few months without washings! But now the longest without really forcing myself to go without washing my hair, is 6-7 days. By then, my scalp becomes itchy and everytime I run my paw through it, it's very greasy. I just now washed my hair using Aussie Moist and Loreal kids extra gentle grape conditioner (just bought it), my hair feels so free!
Yea I know I have a way to go in length, but I know I could not go back to short hair, and I don't miss it at all!
Glad you like the Aussie. Isn't the conditioner great! :-)
Yes, I would think that for anyone the "itchy feel" would indicated it is time for the hair to be washed. You kind of have to "wing-it" as you go along depending on current length. Normally, the longer the hair gets the longer the spaces are between Shampoos needed. Also, when your hair gets really long you will be able to comb that oil away from your scalp and distribute it throughout your hair all the way to the ends to make sure they stay stronger and you can grow even longer...........that is until Terminal length is reached. I think you are going to like having Long Hair very much.
Unfortunately I'm not a longhair, but certainly wish I was one! Always wanted to be one too! But i'm bald on top and have very nice and silky, smooth hair on the sides and back. Head and Shoudlers has worked very well for me. And, I have very oily skin on my head and face, so it's not caused by the shampoo. Thanks for the suggestions.
So what is stopping you from something you wish for and always wanted, Eric? :-)
Elizabeth
I've always wanted hair that would be able to hang in my eyes. With baldness on top, that can't happen. And, the pic you posted does not look that attractive to me. Sorry, but I'm gay and only like longer hair that's silky, smooth.
Well, there is always the possibility of a massive combover, though that may not be the look you are after. ;-)
There is no need for Bill's picture to be attractive to you, apart from being straight, he's already mine and I could not be prouder. :-)
I know homosexual men and women that like curls so I am not sure I get the connection between your being gay and liking straight hair. ;-P
The funny thing is my guy wants the same type of hair, longer and straighter, for himself. I want his hair so we traded. Bill's hair is now mine and he gets my hair. We don't get to wear our new hair but we get to lovingly admire it by appearance and touch. We both end up happy.
Elizabeth, for whom school is out today (woo hoo!) and asks Eric's indulgence for such an irreverent and silly post
On a more reasonable note, after falling for my Bill's shiny brains the adoration of his hair came naturally just because it is a part of the man I love. While I think his hair is perfect as is I know most people short of his mother would not agree. There is much more to hair beyond looks however. Bill is one of those people that revel in the feel of his hair. I have to say I have become hooked on the feel it on my chest too. This might not be as effective for the men in your life though Eric. I wish you well in finding a good man with long, silky smooth hair if you have not already.
....with head and shoulders dry scalp care. I've got shoulder length hair, and I use it every other day and condition afterwards. It's worked wonders for my dandruff and hasn't dried out my hair, but everyone is different. I've got pretty thick and greasy hair, someone with thinner dry hair might have problems. Just my $0.02
Rich, you might try Nature's Gate tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner made for the reduction of dandruff. I will note that these are used by my boyfriend who is bald (and longhaired)but the baldness and dandruff have no correlation that I have heard of, otherwise there would be heaps more bald ladies out there because women of course have dandruff too. You can thank your father for his health concern and let him know he can now support you wholeheartedly in growing your hair longer. This was a purely medical objection to long hair on his part, right? ;-)
Elizabeth
I use Nature's Gate tea tree oil shampoo as well (amongst other things) and I can attest that it works great. I use it to control the natural hair oils, and it leaves my hair feeling really light and clean.
