I was just wondering is there a less damaging way of having highlights put in hair? Because I watched on VH1 the other day how Cameron Diaz spent 7 weeks having her hair highlighted to a lighter shade of blonde for the part in Charlie's angels. Since she needs to look her best as she makes money this way, damage to her hair, the very thing that contributes to her lustruous appearence, would surely not look good. So, if I had my hair (not that I will) highlightened and I had it done the way she did over 7 weeks, i'm not sure what technique she had done, would that cause minimal damage, or is it impossible to get away from the damage that highlights creates?
Why even bother though? Sure, it's your hair, and you can do what you want, but I can't help but feel that too many guys care about the color of their hair. I find highlights hardly noticable myself.
IF you decide to highlight your hair, will you maintain the highlights? Just curious.

I'm not really thinking of having highlights, I was just being hyperthetical, but if the highlights that take 7 weeks really work, and don't damage, then I possibly might consider it. I'm interested, but not bothered at all about it, I like my hair.
Thanks for the reply
It all depends. Do you have the resources to undergo a process similar to hers? Celebrities have all the money in the world, thus they can afford spending hundreds on regular hair processes.
You know, in many ways it really bugs-me when I see Women all over the place w/long hair that appear to have done everything to it that one isn't suppose to do.............and yet it is waist length!!!!!! And here we guys are so "pampering" (myself included) of are own manes as we grow it out.
It just might be tougher than we think.........I just don't know.
ANY colouring is suppose to be damaging, but to what degree? The ladies seem to have a blast with theirs.
Highlights, unusual colourings etc. Let's just face it. To have Long Hair for many guys is fun! Looks great too. Hair is fun to play with and style in different mannors.
But back to your question. Damage..........yes. How much or if it will ruin your hair. ?????????????
Perhaps the stuff in those spray cans that washes-out right away could be used? Beats me.
Yes, I see females that do everything dmging you can think of to thier hair, but yet thier hair looks so good. I believe you can do whatever you want with your hair and if you take good care of it before and after, your hair will(assuming the procedure was done correctly) be ok. You have to give your hair enough time to recover from whatever was done to it. For example, I highlighted my hair and relaxed it. Which is proberly 2 of the most dmging things you can do to your hair. My hair is fine, looks, and feels good. I will not do anything with my hair for another 6 months proberbly. That should be more than enough time for it to recover...I am just having fun with my hair at the moment and loving it! This is just my opinion, I know many ppl here feel differently. I say do whatever makes you feel happy!
I agree ! My wife washes her hair every morning with whatever cheap crappy shampoo and conditioner she can find, towel dries it roughly, blow dries it on the highest heat setting and then leaves for work with shiny, perfect-looking mid-back-length hair. Life's not fair is it ? Acceptance is the key !
Haha, indeed, I know what you mean, all of the time their hair looks so gorgeous, but they treat it so bad!
Yea, I want to enjoy long hair, not worry too much. I know common sense and that putting your hair into a machine certainly can't be 'good':)
I like the lemon Juice idea Txlcpr said, I'll definately give that a blast, maybe starting one day this week.
Yes, I like this idea also. "All natural." Uh-oh.........but we are all men. What if it dries our hair out? What are the long-term effects? Will it need to be conditioned before using? After? Between? Will we have to use the "leave-in" conditioner less our hair begins to fall out?
Yikes! And meanwhile the Women go on their merry way doing anything they want and their hair looks great! I don't get it, do you?
Actually, but ONLY my theory is: Ones hair is tougher than we may think. Much tougher.
Resonance has posted his updated photos today. Does his hair look bad? NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yet he has in the past not treated it all that well. But just look at it!!!!!! (Resonance, if you read this I certainly hope you are not upset with me for spilling the beans.)
Yes for sure........you WILL love it when your hair is longer and you can have all kinds of fun with it. Enjoy it as you go along. That's the best way.
Oh.............one more thing. Could it be that Lime juice would be less harmful than Lemon? The Women could probably use Liquid drain opener with no bad effects! lol :-)
Lol!!! Justin, you are a very funny guy!
I agree that ones hair is a lot tougher than we think.
After all, it must be tough to cope with everything that the weather throws at us, when mother nature pulls a strop.
I am going to do some research on putting lemons in my hair, if I find anything interesting, i'll send the link :p
natural ways to highlight is to use lemon juice. Just spritz some on your hair and go on your merry way in the sunlight. Over time the hair will go lighter.

Whoaa, never thought of doing that before. I will give it a try, but i'll be careful to keep my scalp pH neutral most of the time by using apple cider vinegar rinse. Thanks ck
Also, how often do I do this, how long is enough exposure in the sun before damage could occur?
When should I begin to see results?
My hair is light brown, sometimes looking blonde in the sun or in a light room, bust mostly light/very light brown.
Any more tips on this would be much appreciated. Thanks
Don't use the lemon juice method! You have no control over what color your hair will become, or how much "bleaching" will occur. It is also damaging to hair. Same for the "Sun-In" type of products, they are definitely not good for hair and the results can be unpredictable. My daughter tried both these methods at different times when she was a teen and she fried her hair both times.
If you truly want highlights, the least damaging way would be to see a professional colorist so your results are more predictable and steps can be taken to minimize damage. There will still be drying and damage, though.
