The other day a girl I was hanging out with decided to put my hair in pigtails. "Why not?" I thought. When she was done, she said only half joking that I could get away with it. I kinda agreed...it really didn't look that bad to me. I even thought I might try wearing it like that one day just to have fun.
So today I told another girl-who-is-a-friend of mine about my pigtail experiment, and she looked at me like I was high. I was high, but that was because I'm sick and taking a ton of meds. But the fact remains I liked the pigtails, and was kinda dissapointed to hear her opinion on it. I would expect a typical guy to scoff, but her?
I wouldn't not try something because of someone's opinion, but what do you all think? Ponytails are obviously acceptable (as far as long hair is acceptable), but what about other styles? What about wearing a bun on top, Chinese style? I'm wondering if having long hair and being 'liberated' with it has its limits. Are there hairstyles that are just off-limits? I'm not necessarily talking about styling your hair like the girl on the cover of Cosmo, but wearing it in ways that men used to, but never do now. Does anyone here ever go out in interesting styles, and what are the reactions?
I've worn my hair in a bun before (before I had dreadlocks) and just got a couple of odd stares. Mostly no-one even noticed.
Well for the most part like with anything we tend to live in a very facist/standerd set society to some extent, most people arent always keen on the 'abnormal' due to this, much along with anything else that isnt in a wide variety. Some people will be fine with it..and like with your experiance others might not.
I've seen a few longhairs here in Asheville with pigtails and honestly, I'm looking forward to my hair being long enough for them. It's just a fun look. And seems I remember Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon wearing them...maybe in the "No Rain" video?
Cheers,

I have seen Native American men wearing there hair in 2 tails or braids quite offten
I brief digression. I want to highlight two names that are in the news in conjunction with the current Saturn deep space mission: Cassini and Huygens. The mission consists of a Saturn reconnaissance probe and a Titan moon probe/lander. The Titan probe/lander is named after astronomer Christiaan Huygens who developed the idea of planetary rings in 1659. The Saturn reconnaissance probe is named after astronomer Giovanni Cassini who first described the gap in Saturns rings in 1676. What does all this have to do with male long hair and taboo hairstyles? Check out the progress pictures for these gentlemen in the links below!
Nice!
I've already been given the nickname "Newton" by the mathematics department at my school.
Nothing is "Taboo" when it comes to a hairstyle for either Man or Women.
What IS "Taboo" is not allowing yourself to be yourself.
Wear your hair however you like. If it gives you inner happiness that's all that counts. What others "say" doesn't count.
Let them do their thing, and you do yours. I mean really, there is no law being broken here. Life is short. To "stiffle" yourself just because of "Society" or what someone "thinks" of how you wear your hair is ever so unfortunate. Be original................it's fun! :-)
Even if it's taboo to most, you should still be able to wear your hair in different styles if you have the desire to.
I often wore my hair in a tight knot up top, but only because I couldn't stand having the frizzy on my neck and face all the time. It frizzed bad on top even after I tied up the knot samurai style, but it helped me tolerate the hair for much longer than I would have normally.
I say do what ya want! :)
And so don't I! (Inner happiness cannot be bought.) But to have it is worth more than all the money in the world.
Could you post on how to tie the "samurai style" topknot? I'd be interested in that.
I went all the way to Dreamweaver braiding looking for the way to do the traditional topknot, and I can't find anything. I guess it'll just have to be experimentation until someone figures it out.
I found good picture of one, at the very least. Link's at the bottom, and there're a few more pictures of sumo hair in that article thing.
My friend Karl is in a band and his hair isn't long enough to stay in a pony tail when he's playing so he wears it in pigtails. It looks great and as far as I know no one has commented on it. Wear your hair the way you feel comfortable!

Hey there :-) Yeah this is an interesting topic, and I often discuss with my mother about what is acceptable and what is not!
Recently I tried this style, I am unsure how to name it! I admit that I didnt actually wear this out of the house, although my girlfriend (who's idea it was) tried to persuade me!
What do you think?

Wow Gaz - that's something else!!! The style I was describing above is much the same, but without the ties on the sides, instead the hair is pulled back to the lower tail at the back.
A good test to see if you could wear this style out of the house would be to get your girlfriend to wear it too. If she'll do it, then why not you too? ;-)
Sorted
It looks like something my daughter would do with her hair. She's seven. I bet you can't get your girlfriend to go out like that!
Hey man. My hair's your length. I have worn it in cornrows for a while, sometimes with beads at the ends. I even grew a goatee and forced a few beads on the tips, Johnny Depp / Pirates of the Carribbean style. Damn if I didn't get some stares. It was cool. The only problem was that when my holiday break and it was time to go back to "real life", I had to return to looking "normal". And that's the whole problem for us guys. Society allows only so much within the culture for men to push the limits. A few summers ago I wore my hair in a kickass mohawk, about 5" long, front to base of head. Same thing--limits. So dude, that's sadly what you're going to face within your circle of friends and without. It's a pisser, eh? A couple weekends ago I had some hair weaves worked into my hair for a much longer look. Damn it was hot! I should have braided it though.
On another point, man, did you ever find the hair bands? Sally's Beauty Supply has them. I have one that's clear so unless you're right on top of me, you can't see it much. And they're cheap, too.

I regularly wear my hair in Beckham-inspired styles when I'm playing football. A common favorite is the "double-tail" - that's one ponytail tied into another. You don't get the looks so much cos people just think your a Beckham-wannabe and leave you alone.
I've tried pigtails but not out on the street. My hair isn't really long enough anyway. But I think that broadly speaking a guy can get away with any hairstyle provided its not over-elaborate. Simple braids and pigtails are well within the realms of acceptability. The only thing is it'll look dumb if your hair is too short for the style.
I wear my hair in all kinds of styles. Some would be considered more "Feminine" than others. Case in point, a low ponytail is considered more masculine, but a high ponytail is considered more feminine. Why? Beats me? I say the heck with it. I wear whatever I am in the mood for. Some days I just feel like wearing my hair in a high ponytail, or a double ponytail, or a high braided ponytail, or a bun secured at the crown, (which is how my hair is right now). We are not truly liberated unless we are free to wear our hair any way that we want. To quote Bob Marley, "Only ourselves can free our minds." I for one, am not planning on passing this way again, so I do what I want. Everyone else can just deal with it!
In theory any hairstyle is acceptable. But 2 pigtails is still identified as 'girly'. Even among women, over 40's might be criticised as 'mutton dressed as lamb' for wearing 2 pigtails, but not for 1! I'm not saying that's right, it's just the way I perceive public opinion. Re: buns/topknots - they seem to be OK for sumo wrestlers.
I guess if you're 6ft 6ins, 19 stones with a bushy beard and tatoos, you could get away with 2 pigtails more easily!
cheers, Barry
I used to sing with a 50-something man who sometimes wore his long, salt & pepper hair in two pigtails. Sometimes he wore his hair in two braids. He had the Willie Nelson look. I admired him so much for bucking the norm. Funny thing was that his wife was the picture of ordinary & middle class on the outside, but apparently, she, too, didn't mind, so I applaud her, too. :-)
