I know we have several computer guys on here, so I'm hoping someone can help. The screen on my notebook PC (HP Pavilion N5310) has developed a pretty serious flicker. A few minutes after using the computer the screen gets jittery, and thin, white lines flicker all over it. When the screen powers off during power save it stops, but a few minutes after waking the PC back up it starts again. Anyone ever experienced this? I'm really hoping a new computer isn't a necessity.
Cheers,
JBC
Hi Jeremy,
This is normally caused by one of two things: A faulty graphics card, which can easily be replaced, or a loose cable connection which again can be fixed. If you Notebook is still under warranty this won't be a problem, but it will mean you'll have to drag the old 386 out of the cupboard whilst the notebook is in for repairs.
Another thought: HiFi Speakers and Mobile phones can cause interference that can cause monitors to flicker, I'd check you not using you notebook in close proximity to any big speakers or magnetic sources. (I know this effects CRT monitors but I'm not sure if it'll effect the TFT screen in your notebook, but worth double checking.

Hi Sorted:
Thanks for the info. HP suggested I reinstall some drivers. We'll see how that helps. If not, I'll definitely check the graphics card and cable connections next.
Cheers,
Jeremy
Actually I just read your post again, if the problem only occurs as your screen kicks back in into Windows, then it could be software and reinstalling drivers could help.
If the problem persists or if it occurs seemingly at random its probably a hardware problem, (as described previously.)
Also another thought that comes to mind is that they've given your a machine with a Graphics Card which is using a resolution and refresh rate not compatible with your monitor. Adjusting the settings so its compliant with the monitors capabilities might help. I've never known this happen with a laptop though, only an old Monitor coupled with a new PC.
HP Support will give better advice than me though, they know their product. Or atleast you hope they do ;-)
