Now, I've been told the hair loss gene comes from the mothers side, but what about the hair texture gene? My mother has wavy hair and my fathers hair is perfectly straight (think Cobain or Beckham)
My hair is straight but thick, and I also have a bit of a problem with a dry scalp. The hair on the sides looks fine, but the top is just too damn uneven! I can't do anything with it anymore!
I don't have any pictures yet, but to describe: light brown, the hair on the back of my head and sides are straight, lay flat, and as of now it's sort of soft and prickly to the touch. On top I have a wave or 2, some rebellious strands, and general uneven growth. It just doesn't look as neat as it did a few years ago, or when I was a kid. I suspect it was some of my own fault. I didn't really pay much attention to my hair, colored it blond when it was fashionable, wore too many hats, overcombed it. The damage is my fault, but I want to make ammends!
should I just shave it and start from scratch???

No of course not! You don't have to start from scratch. Just evenly cut your hair. Yeah, and stay away from all the hat wearing. You can still wear them, but not all the time. No matter what you do, there are bound to be some hairs longer or shorter than the other ones. Just cut the uneven parts. Bleaching hair and dying hair is not good either. I have died my hair before, and it can damage the hair. My hair is fine now though, even thogh most of the dye is still in my hair.
Don't cut your hair, and start from scratch.
You will hate doing this, trust me. I had to do this before and it is not fun wanting your hair to be long and it isn't anymore.
I am glad all my hair, and 5 more inches of it is back now :)
Hair does not grow perfectly evenly. This becomes apparent when hair gets really long. Go to directory of users, click on my photo and you will see that my hair is about 2 inches longer on the right than on the left in the back view photo. Absalom
No! Shaving your hair and starting over is your No 1 Guarantee of uneven growth.
If you've gotten a little length in your hair just have a trim to even things up, you'll not need to cut any more than 1/2 inch to even it up.
Hair will not grow evenly, period. Plus it'll look particularly uneven at around 12-18 months if you've grown out from a buzz without trims. If you stick it out until 18-24 months then your hair will take care of itself.
If you can't wait that long then trim to even out. Find a stylist you can trust, explain your long hair goals and ask her to cut as little as possible, ideally nothing off the top (which you said was fine.) :-)
Hope that helps
