Im really mad, becouse for about a year my mother says "oh yeah errr cut your go-t adn mustash, they will grow faster" So i cut em... and they dont grow faster..... I mean is this just an old wifes tail or something to make sure men dont have beards or something?
This myth was supported by 2 things. First an observation in Men's Facial Hair. When a young boy first shaved it would come back thicker. And second when you trim or cut split ends this allows the hair to grow because it is not damaged.
Maybe that's what the old wife really meant and just mumbled or something.
The bit about split ends is true, so a hairdresser tells me. Split ends break off and then the split travels back along the hair. Cutting off split ends doesn't make hair grow any faster from the scalp, but it stops the disintegration of the ends. I'm told split end breakage can even sometimes exceed the hair growth rate, so your hair becomes shorter!
But it takes time, say 18 months, to develop split ends. So if you have an inch and a half trimmed off every 18 months, that still leaves perhaps 8 inches of growth.
