Picture Purged
I was hoping that some of you folks out there could answer a question. I'm half-Osage Indian and wear my hair longish (nearly shoulder-length) and a bit worried about traveling through parts of Eastern Europe. I'm traveling through Estonia, Russia, Ukraine and Romania and don't know what the prevailing attitudes towards long hair is.
First posting, btw.
Well, at least here in Finland a man with long hair is quite common sight. I'm not sure what's the situation in countries you mentioned.
Hey man, glad you wrote. I didn't get to Finland when I was in Europe recently but wanted to. You say that long hair on men is pretty common there? I'm curious. Long--as in shoulder length like yours? Or a little shorter? How about older men? I noticed in several countries even the older men wear their hair longer than here in the States. Great you shared what you did and if you've time, really, I'm curious to know more. Josh
There's lots of men with shoulder lenght hair or even longer in Finland. I think that is because we have quite a number of metal bands and many youngish men listen them.
Welcome to Finland next time you visit Europe :)
Having seen the Russian's football team contesting Euro 2004 I'd say given the number of longhairs in their squad, you're onto a safe bet for Russia. A nation is rarely prejudice against their national heros.
Sorted.
You've got nothing to worry about. European men, including Eastern European men, tend to wear their hair longer than men here in the States. There's a more pronounced number of skinheads, though, which you'll notice right away. But overall, you'll feel right at home. I've just returned so I'm kind of speaking from experience. Let me know if there's anything else you're curious about. Josh (in Denver)
Hey............great looking hair!
As for the rest of the world, I don't believe you will receive the hostilities over there that you get here in the US. No way!
Ya, Europe is not the place to worry about that. Remember the rock & roll rule: If there are rock bands in the country then it's probably hair friendly. Russia not only has lots of rock bands but has has a few world famous rock acts since the 80's (with long hair).
Now if you are traveling to certain parts of the Middle East then you might want to ask. I was in Israel and had the longest hair of not only any man in the country but probably the women too. The Isralies don't have any problems with it and the Palestinian Moslems are so unused to seeing anything like that found it to be more of a curiosity than a threat.
I don't think that I'd venture to some other countries as they have actual civil laws (not just dusty old religious laws) against long hair on men, but if a country is as closed minded as that then it's unlikely that you would have much of a casual reason to go there anyway.
Turkmenistan is technically Asia (East of the Rive Volga and the Ural Mountains=Asia)
Sorry to be pedantic *grin*.
