Ok, so i started growing my hair sometime back in october, its been about 8 months now. My hair looks long but the thing is when I let it air dry after a shower it becomes a curly mess. Im hoping that it wont keep growing like this.. I guess you could call it frodo baggins'ish I wanna towel dry it so hopefully it wont get like that, but i heard towel drying was bad.
My hair does pretty much the same as yours when just left alone to airdry. It annoyed me for some time, but at some point I found out that if I take the towel and move it from front to back, one time gently, and then use a brush to slick my hair back, then when it dries it'll be reasonably straight/wavy instead of curly.
I get this, I usually just leave it to air dry and when it's nearly completely dry I comb it and stick a warm woolie cap over it, an hour later, PRESTO, it's all straight and stays like that most of the day!
Sometimes the sides start to curl so I just rub the woolie cap in downward strokes over my hair and it goes straight, but I have to wear the cap about 1 hour in the morning, and once after school to keep it almost perfectly straight.
My hair was pretty wavy after 8 months, and it got worse, particularly the back which was a mass of curls until about 14 months then it started to straighten out a bit. Its still pretty wavy, but thats just my hair.
Towel Drying isn't bad for your hair provided its done gently, its only really bad for your hair because aggresive toweling can cause tangles. The Tangles themselves don't cause damage but tearing through the tangles with a comb will damage your hair.
Things that are really bad for your hair are blow drying (except on a cold setting.) Patting your hair dry with a towel is actually recommended.

Blow drying is always a factor that pops up when it comes to hair damage. The thing is, it's all relative. I mean, alot of girls blow dry their hair everyday on the 'hottest' setting...and they most likely do this for years, though their hair remains relativley good-looking.
Also, when girls do experience damage, what are they meant to do...it's not likely they'ed buzz it all off now is it? (Except maybe in rare circumstances) :p
The question is, are guys too fussed about long hair? don't get me wrong,I care for my hair as best I can, but still, i don't think girls think or worry about it in the same way..i may be wrong though.
For me, at least, I think part of it is that there are really, really few guys around where I live who have long hair, and so I get more criticism about it than I'd like. Because of that, I often feel as though I need to set a good example for long-haired men by having my hair look as healthy and undamaged as I can.
I'm a firm believer that heat is the worst thing you can do to your hair, the hotter and more frequent, the worse it gets. As a mechanical design engineer experienced with various materials, I can tell you that the strength and durability of almost any material (particularly rubber and plastics, but also metals) begins to decline rapidly before any damage is visible.
As for the girls you know with healthy looking, blow-dried hair, do they have very long hair (to the waist), or merely just past the shoulders? I've noticed that the ones with very long hair never seem to blow dry or curl, usually wear a pony tail or braid. Typically the more styled, dried, and curled hair does not get very long.
