Hello everyone...
I recently posted about my intention to grow back my hair. I've developed a few questions since then:
(1) For all those longhairs who shampoo: which shampoo/conditioner do u use?
(2) I still have my hair at about 1-2 inches long. Is there anything I should be doing so my hair doesn't grow out badly, or...? Give me ALL Caring tips, and please dont provide links because I may have seen them and was bewildered by the pages of information that they have. Please keep your suggestions mainly at a line or two.
(3) I've decided to let my hair be WITHOUT maintenance cuts (which, I may recall, is why im back to 1 damn inch). I'll trim my own sideburns, and shave on my own the hairs on the back of my neck. However, I don't really wanna grow out my hair as long as many would, probably just like this:

In fact, I think this is the same hairstyle that I want. When it comes time (probably after a year or so), would a hair stylist be able to fix it, or would I have problems making my hair in the aforementioned way?
(4) I remember when I grew out my hair, the hair on the back of my head began to curl up (i dont have curly hair). Is this because I wasnt caring for my hair properly?
(5) I've recalled how sometimes my hair wouldn't look "good", and so I'd put gel, hair spray, hair oil, etc. to make it look good. I don't want to do that again. Can I just put a hat or a kufi on? Would this damage my hair in anyway, as I plan to wear them for months until they fully grow out?
Thanks in advance for all those who help. I appreciate it.
Hi There,
Welcome back, I posted my replies below:
I use Redken Smooth Down and I alternate with another brand to remove build-up (Clariol Herbal Essences).
To avoid growing out "badly" hmm... wash, condition, avoid heat and bleach.

Well not really long, quite short actually but its relative to your current state I suppose. Generally a style like this is pretty easy to achieve if you have straight hair.
No that's called the awkward stage and happens to everyone except maybe those with super straight hair. You can avoid it by keeping the back trimmed up until the top layers catch-up
They'll do next to no damage, and certainly are the safer choice than gels and hair spray which can dry your hair out.
I don't like the first link. Way too long. Second link was much better though, thanks.
It's about 8-9 inches, how is it 'quite short?' Do you know a name for this style btw? The dude on deceptikons also has it.
Problem is I never remember it curling up in ANY other part of my hair. Just the back. And once I think about it, when I used to get maintenance cuts, thats the only part of my head they used to trim.
So if I do wear a hat/kufi for about a year, it won't mess up my hair? Would it cause frizzes as some say?
The First link is "the Bible" for Being a Long Hair its Bill Choisser's site, he's a regular contributor here. So its a pity you found it too long. The second link is my own site. *grin* So glad you enjoyed it :-)
Well 'The Dude on deceptikons' is me :-) My hair is about 10 inches and I'm growing longer, its a matter of perspective but generally I consider "Long Hair" to be shoulder length and beyond. (So I still have a little way to go myself.)
Yeah it only affects the back because the hair is always pressing against the collar and the neck, you have to trim it very short at the back to avoid it. If you not growing past your shoulders then there is no problem in keeping the back really short.
You might get "hat hair" but nothing that can't be recovered by washing & conditioning and stopping wearing the hat.
I like having hat hair, it's the only time it will look straight lol.
Yeah, I graduated the other day and then we get a nice hat to wear! I noticed that my was incredibly straight the day after having worn it. It was weird. But I suppose my hair wasn't 100% dry when I put it on.
Oh...thats cool. I mean, I got nothing against the other one, its very good too but its an overflow of information, you know what I mean?
Oh ok. By the way, when you started, how many inches of hair did you have on your head (est.?)
By the way, what brand-name shampoos + conditioners are acceptable (i.e. not too harsh, etc.) I currently use Pantene Pro-V's Sleek & Smooth 2-in-1 (yeah I know what you think about them, and I'm beginning to agree with you) Shampoo + Conditioner, and although it is smoother, it also looks Extremely dry. I don't like that. Should I switch to something else? I don't trust salons for some reason (well, I'm back to 1 inch of head hair because of them, but no hard feelings :)).
