I'm not much of a TV guru, but sometimes, channel surfing, you can't help but pass through a few religious stations. It seems like many of the TV ministers have longer hair (not "long" but longer than most business men) and they all seem to have Southern accents too (thought I'd throw that in). So here's the question: are they cool? or are they trying to look cook? (Some don't look too cool to me and some are downright scary looking--angry, mean in the face, that sort of thing.)
This may not answer your question but I find myself at a perpendicular with many a preacher as the true preacher needs not a house of stone and wood but simply a mouth and a listener and thus he can spread the Word of God one at a time. This mass TV stuff is not for me. In a church sometimes it can get out of hand and the best way is just to be calm and talk plain. (Sort this post out, Sorted! :D)
I think your right Marc. These guys can sound rather fanatical on TV and its difficult to take them seriously, whilst I'm not saying TV isn't a great medium for getting any point of view accross, I don't believe its necessary. There's a lot to be said for talking straight and having a frank exchange of ideas. TV tends to be an opportunity for these preachers to go on a rant - in fact so can any sermon.
Maybe minisiters should alter the way they preach, just having a chat with people and discussing ideas is probably a much better way of communicating.
As for the original question are they trying to be cool? I dunno, the certainly don't look it, but then again with role models like the arch bishop of cantebury you can probably understand why opt for such styles
