This weekend I was competing in one of my ballroom dance competitions. On the day I did the smooth dances (waltz, tango, foxtrot, viennese waltz), I wore my hair in a braid so it would be out of the way of my partner. I was also dressed in semi-formal attire.
At the conclusion of the heats, an audience member stopped me to comment. He said, "when I see you dance, I can envision you on the back of a Harley with the wind in your hair." I thought it was a strange comment but thanked him anyway.
But it got me thinking about the way people make associations between appearance and archetypes. Does the fact that I have long hair and a tailback goatee make me a "biker" rather than a "dancer"?
William,
Only to him (and others like him). Others may assume your appearance marks you as a hippy, artist, musician, computer programmer, etc. :-) I had a woman go right down that very list, asking me if I ride a motorcycle, play in a band, work as a programmer (got me there).
Is that what you call it, a "tailback goatee"? That must make you a football player too. :-)
(Looks great, by the way)
The picture that displays on my messages was taken back on April 27. At the time, I had a handlebar moustache. Since then, I have trimmed back on the 'stache and grown out a tailback goatee. A tailback is one where the goatee portion does not go straight down from the corners of the mouth, but has points that curve back along the jaw line.
The link below shows a photo of a tailback goatee. No, that is not me...
