... and after sharing my thoughts with my wife to get her input, I've decided to stop growing my hair, and maintain the length it is now.
I started growing my hair the day I graduated High School, in 1990, after deciding it was high time for a self-imposed makeover. I was tired of short hair, and was more than eager to try something new. My original goal was to stop at my shoulders. However, by the time I reached my goal, I'd found that I was growing more and more addicted to the length, and couldn't compell myself to stop there. With my original plan pretty tossed out the window, I decided to let it do its own thing, and I would decide when to stop later.
14 years and half a dozen trims later, my hair is just a few inches below my waist - most noticeable from the back - and I couldn't be happier with the progress I've made. I have far exceeded my own expectations, both in my patience to grow hair this long, and the luck I've had in finding work in a corporate environment that promotes cultural diversity and individual expression.
As for the reason for my decision, it's really pretty simple: I dread the prospect of having to care for much longer hair.
I'd also like to thank everyone here for letting me share my experiences, and maintain an active presence on the forum. Special thanks to our host, Victor, for having created the forum in the first place. You're all a really cool bunch of people.
It's good to know that you feel that you've completed your mission growing out your hair. Now you can live without longhair being no different of a responsability than tying your shoes.
It is pretty liberating. hehe
Absolutely!
That is great and may I add you have wonderful wavy hair. I wish I started growing my hair out in 1990 but I was just a little kid than, but even at that age I always loved long hair. You can still grow it longer if you want, but I guess your hair is as long as you want it. I want my hair only an inch from the floor. With me being so tall, it might take longer than expected :)
Thanks.
For now, anyway, yeah.
LOL! Good luck! ;D
Im glad you've reached a point that you are happy with! Remember, if you ever decide to grow it longer, there won't be any stopping you. And it looks awesome where it is! Nice work.
That is great that you reached your goal. Hair as long as waist length is reasonably easy to maintain. IMHO you are making a good choice. The more you exceed waist length the more difficult it is to maintain. I know this very well, having hair 16 inches past my waist, it almost reaches my knees. Those extra 16 inches make it much more difficult to maintain. Absalom
...my friend! I can't blame you on the care issue. I'm going to probably stop at mid-back! Thanks for the board compliment. I've always enjoyed reading your posts since I first came here 2 years ago. :)
Personally I can't think of a better place to stop growing. :-)
Why not - its a hell of an acheivement in itself.
And lets face it, any longer and risk sitting on it, catching it in doors, or even tripping over it... (wonder if Absalom's ever done that? *grin*)
Sorted
Yes, sitting on it is a problem and I do have to exercise caution to protect it from getting caught in things. Absalom
Can't say that I noticed any difference care between waist length hair and almost knee length where it is now.
I'm still faster in the shower than a lot of short haired people and use the same amount of product. Still have to brush it and tie it back in certain situations. Still wear it loose almost all of the time. Still at the point where I forget about it now and then.
Well done, man!
Now you just have to find someone you can trust to trim it! Oh well ...
No worries there! :)
There's a salon here in town that specializes in long hair. I had them do my last trim a few years ago. They did a fantastic job while maintaining the length. I'll be returning to them every so often to keep it trimmed to my current length. Speaking of which, I need to schedule an appointment, soon, to finally rid myself of these split ends.
Is that one of those 'GM' salons?
Which town is that?
Sorry, not familiar with that term.
Kansas City, MO. It's called Salon Design.
It stands for 'George Michael' - presumably not the guy from Wham, LOL! The ladies on TLHC are always talking about them.
...what is that red thing in your shredder?
Kit-Kat wrappers. My shredder doubles as a trash can.
hehehe
KIT KAT . . .mmmmmmm...mmmm
I said n/m!
Hey Nyghtfall, we've both been hangin' out here for a long time. Now that our hair's not changin', sometimes I wonder why we keep hangin' on here, but hell, we know why - it's to help out others who follow in our footsteps. Congratulations on reaching that goal we all eventually get of having arrived at a steady state of being.
Here's where I'm at today....

Yeah, my hair's stopped growing too, but it's been the one to do the deciding. Terminal length. Considering my age and all the time I spend outdoors, I'm lucky to have the length I've got. I was about to where I wanted to stop the growth anyhow. Hell, I like my hair blowing free in the wind, and 22 inches is plenty to be dealing with on a windy day. There's more to my life than being a longhair. I'm a hiker too, and hikers much of the time don't have pretty pampered hair. [big grin in the sunshine]
I wonder how many others on here besides Nyghtfall and me are not "growin' it out" anymore, but rather just have the hair they intend for now to always have. There's actually a lot of peace in not being forever changing anymore, and to once again just be the same all the time. Growing it out was a great journey, but all great journeys do come to an end. We have arrived.
Bill
Hi Bill,
Cool hair, it really suits you! I was just wondering where was that picture taken? Looks awesome there? Is it Canada or somewhere like that? I enjoy hiking/climbing to when I get the time. I usually go to either Snowdonia in North Wales or the Brecon Beakons (sp?) further south.

Thanks man.
Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side. The mountains in the background are in California. The photo was taken just a couple of weeks ago.
Cool you got hiking places over there and that you like to get out on the trail. There's a new 165-mile loop trail that goes around that lake you see behind me. I haven't hiked any of it yet.
I've hiked about 40 miles already this week, all close to home. About 5 of those miles were with Absalom. I'll probably add another 10 miles or so to this week's mileage today.

Lake? Looks like an Ocean! Mind you what we call a lake in Britian is normally just a couple of hundred yards wide! I've so gotta get myself out the Western U.S. you guys have some fantastic scenary.
Mind you. Its not bad here either...
It's Brecon Beacons I think, I don't live that far from there really.
Bill, you have such a fabulous look. I love it. I like Nyghtfall's, too, very much, though different. My husband long ago decided to maintain his long black hair at roughly mid-back length instead of longer 'cuz he doesn't like making ponytails, though he does so for his job. But he wants easy-to-care-for long hair that he can headbang with and wear down 99% of the time. "Fun length" I call it, although for me, that would be about classic length. I'm not ready for that cut, though, probably never will be.
JE
Thanks!
Yeah, if it were much longer it would be much more of a pain, flying loose all the time. I love it loose! What you see is my terminal length, at least subjecting it to sun and wind a lot produces that length. [grin] But I'd probably cut it at about that length anyhow, because I do like it loose.
Absalom is sitting here as I type this; he is the opposite extreme. He keeps his mane tied with multiple ties so it's like a rope all the time. He likes it that way, but he also says he has no choice, with it being almost to his knees.
Bill
Yeah, I know what he's talking about, having been there for a while, myself. You don't really have a choice if you want your hair to remain healthy and beautiful. I miss wearing mine loose more often, but hubby and I make it work now and then.
JE
P.S. I LOVE your smiles, too (see thread above about smiling).
Congratulations on a succesfully journey, you have reached a point that many set out for but few ever reach.
I have found, often times in life, that a quest is exciting and rewarding. I have also found, especially after acheiving a difficult goal, that the ability to be content and just enjoy the fruits of that labor is also very rewarding, instead of focusing on wanting more.
