hey guys, my name is billy and I'm trying to grow my hair long and I get to a certain point (after about six months) and I get really frustrated and want to cut it off because it's too short to pull back into a ponytail yet there really isn't much style to it. What do I do? Any tips? Also, I am finding that my hair grows quick (fortunate for me) and it seems like the back grows much faster than the front and the top. I don't want to walk around with a mullet, what should I do? What about taking women's vitamins with biotin to make the hair grow faster. One site I visited recommended taking these, while other sites say that vitamin or no vitamin, the hair does not grow any faster. Thanks for your help.

Sure 6 months in and you hit what we call the "awkward stage" it happens to almost everyone and can last a few months or even a year. You can ease the awkward stage somewhat by getting a very light trim to shape things up (I'm talking nothing off the top 1/2 inch back n sides.) But you need to get a decent Salon stylist who you trust to trim your hair, not some butcher at the local $5 barbershop.
Still even trimming you hair can keep you fighting the awkward stage longer, I trimmed every 3 months during my first year and for the first time in a year I feel like I'm getting over the worst. (I've been growing 17 months.) So if my experience has taught me anything I'd say try and go as long as possible between trims and trim as little as possible.
I doubt this is case, it probably doesn't grow any faster, whilst hair growth is not even all over the scalp, its rarely massively different from one part to another. More likely the back is the first part of your hair to "look" long because its the closest to your shoulders. If it bugs you then get this part trimmed up every 3-6 months, leaving the rest well alone.
Vitamin supplements are great if you have a vitamin deficiency, but once your body has all the nutrients it neats it'll expell the rest as waste. If you eat a balanced diet and take regular exercise then vitamin supplements are largely unnecessary, but they'll help (and not just your hair) if you are a little run down.
No problem welcome to the board.

Essentially, what Sorted said. At 6 months you are entering the awkward stage that we've all been through--that is, those of us who have long hair. If you don't go through this, you don't get to the longhair side!
Just be willing to go through it. Forget vitamins, eat well. And wait. And learn the lessons that waiting will teach you.

okay, next question, do I need to get a trim every three or four months to get "the split ends" cut off. Some people say yes because it makes the hair grow healthier, some people say no. Is there a real answer to this question?
No, there isn't a real answer to this question, opinion is polarised. Some people say yes others no.
Personally I'm noticing a few split ends of late, but I don't want to trim for another 3-4 months. Especially considering its only like the odd stand of hair thats damaged and there are thousands of others that are fine. So why trim them all off?
Obviously I can only really see the split ends on my bangs as I can't pull my hair around from the back to look at it. But what I've noticed at the bangs is you can break the split off, and it doesn't appear to travel on up the hair shaft more than a few millimeters...
I've taken to dealling with split ends on a strand by stand basis trimming just above the split. Dusting off the damaged ends, but I can do nothing about the hair I can't reach at the back. So I'm leaving them and I fully expect to have a fair few split ends when I finally trim, but I doubt if I will have to loose any length (more than 1 cm) to deal with them.
Meanwhile I've using leave in conditioner on the tips to prevent damage and recondition my hair. Should let me grow for a few more months without having to worry about serious damage.
Hope that helps.
