I hAve been looking into this career field because my interests are in hair. What do I have to do to break into this field. Anybody have any suggestions. I live in Michigan
Here's what you do. Find out in your city the names of the beauty schools from the phone book. Then start visiting different salons, buddy up to some of the stylists, tell them what you're thinking of doing, lay out the schools you've found, and take a poll. Generally one, at least, is going to be a total ripoff. One is going to be outstanding. The prices are going to vary, and most are a lot more expensive than you'd imagine. But some will offer scholarships, grants, things to offset the costs. Anyway, my sister-in-law is a stylist and this is the plan she worked, found the best school for the best price, and has never regretted it. But some of her friends, now graduated and working, went to other schools. A few bellyache all the time about getting taken for ride. Good luck, man. Great profession! Josh
I want to become a stylist for a number of reasons. The first is that you meet new people each day. And second people's hair interest me majorily.
Now I'm good with a computer, but honestly computers bore me. I'm not really suited to be a construction or Industrial worker as I'm cut but not very muscular or strong. I have always had a thing for long hair, even as a boy. W
Do most schools expect you know how to braid, and put things into styles or do they teach extensivly about all that. Because I would love to learn how to braid hair, but never learned because I always had short hair.
My aunt is a hair stylist who is a manager at my dececed grandfather's hair salon. She went to a beauty school and used to cut my hair when I was little until coincidentally another salon closer to my home is a close friend of my mom's who also went to beauty school. So that's the way to go.
P.S. don't feel justified as a straight guy (if you are I don't really know) learning to be a hair stylist. In the words of Mad TV's Ms. Swan, "Silly monkey in the bush!"
I'm perfectly straight I like only women. I know that is the stereotype I have to deal but I already am deciding to grow my hair long so who gives a damn.
I agree with the other replies that you need to go somewhere to get the right qualifications.
Assuming that you would like to style long hair, why not contact your nearest George Michael salon. They specialise in looking after long hair, and might appreciate a longhair stylist!
You can find details by searching on Google, or visit either longhairlovers.com or forums.longhaircommunity.com
