I was just wondering, what looks better, hair grown without trims from short to shoulder level, or hair with trims, like for example cutting the sides level with each other. I think Wolfeyes has done that. Because I haven't got any trims so far and I was wondering if it would look bad by, say the twelth month, or 11-12 inches, or when would it start to look good? If anyone has got pics grown out with no trims I would really like to see them.
In the past two years I've only had one trim (at about three months) so my hair has effectively grown untrimmed. You can look at my progress pictures on my website (June update will be posted in the next 24 hours). I don't think my untrimmed ends look too bad. I've never had a problem with splits. My length that has numerous layers from the original haircut that make bunning and braiding a bit more interesting with the various bits sticking out. For me the maximum growth I am getting makes up for the slightly haggard look of my untrimmed hair.
I am just slightly behind Gollan in progress and I have not gotten one single trim yet. The only thing I fix up is my neck hair and my sideburns. My hair is even all around getting well passed my shoulders now my bangs are just a bit shorter then everything else but there still well passed my chin so i dont see the need for a trim anytime soon.
I think you need to consider your hair type and you long term goals. If you want your hair to look longer as fast as possible then don't trim, with the kinda growth rates you describe SurferDude your hair will be halfway down your back in 12 months time.
Also if you have thick hair growing out without trims will ensure naturall layers, something that will help make your hair look less bulky when the top layers reach shoulder length. However in the early stages thick hair is going to be more rebelious and difficult to style so trimming to ensure shape will make your hair more manageable.
I have thick hair and I really struggled last summer (6-9 months) because I had thick hair, so I kept it trimmed every 3 months, which helped, but only for about a month. So I would have good hair for 1 month and bad hair for 2 months, before trimming a little getting the shape back and starting the cycle over again.
I never had all the layers taken out of my hair and given the thickness of it I wouldn;t want to. I havn't trimmed for nearly 5 months and I don't plan on trimming again for a few months yet to come, infact the only thing "wrong" with my hair for not trimming is that the back is not as even as I would like.
Honestly with your growth rates, I'd grow through the first year no trims. By your previous comments you'll have 10-12 inches of hair by then. If you want to trim it to neaten it up then, go for it but I'd leave things alone until then, besides you'll probably reach 12 months and not want to trim :-)
Sorted
When all is said and done, it is what makes YOU happiest. Yes, of course a "trim" will lengthen the time it takes to achieve really Long Hair...........but it might very well appeal to you to get things "evened-up" every now and then. All depends on what looks best on you in your eyes.
Much of this "trim stuff" I think can be a left-over of being so used to getting haircuts................it somehow at first just doesn't seem right not to be getting haircuts in the early stages for so many.
But of course the best route to follow is NO Haircuts. Odd as it seems, the hair simply takes care of itself and when long enough looks great just letting it do its own thing.
But again............it is the "inner happiness" with your hair that is most important.
One note of caution of which I have read time and time again about someone going for a "trim." The Barber or Stylist takes far too much off and the person ends up very upset and lets it be know to all of us on the Hyperboard. (And EVERY TIME the other guys write in with the advice of either DON'T get a trim, or "check out" with care who is going to do it 1st so that too much won't be taken off.
Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do on your journey.
Thanks for all the comments, I was thinking of trimming the back a little because I want it to look better and I'm not exactly crazy about the apparent mullet style I almost have! But I'm breaking up from school now and no one will see me apart from my closest friends for at least another 3 months! That gives me plenty of time to grow it long. I've decided that if my hair still looks bad by September, by that I mean the back looks far longer than the bangs, I'm going to trim 1/2 to 1 inch, get my mother to do it probably.
It's good to know growing without trims is the best way, and plus I want to grow my hair long as quick as possible.
