Hey everyone,
I don't browse the board very often anymore but wanted to share this story with you. I remember reading something along the same lines while still in the 'awkward phase'.
It's 1:30 AM and i'm walking home. I'm a little red eyed because of the nice fresh air :-) I see a cop car stopped at the street corner up ahead and as there was no traffic i deicded to Jay walk to the other side of the street ( a short cut home). The cop car slowly drives through the intersection and pulls up beside me where a police woman ask "How are you doing this evening?" I replied politely and to make a long story short they advised me that I would most likely be stopped a few more times on the way home because they were searching for a long haired suspect!
They were polite which is always nice when being approached by police. I told them i'd stick to the sidewalks for the rest of my walk home as opposed to taking the short cut through the park (the last thing i wanted was to have a bunch of over excited police with dogs waitting for a 'long haired suspect' to come walking through a dark park).
For all of you in the awkward stage.. keep your head up high.
Just wanted to share
The next time this happens ask them what other description details they have of the suspect. They will most likely describe someone who doesn't really fit you at all...then bring that to their attention and advise them that the other officers should also be aware of those important description details so they can find the correct person.
True, but long hair on a guy is pretty easy to see from a distance even in low light. Now eye color, hair color, height etc. can be hard to judge from a distance, so I think the long hair i.d. is simply practical.
There are far more short-haired men than guys like me. Most men don't have a full white beard. I'm a pretty unique-looking guy. I wonder how many times I've been absolutely spared from questioning because of my beard and mane. A criminal can take it off to change his appearance, but he sure can't grow it!
Similarly, if anyone got a hold of my credit cards, he'd have a tough time using them since my picture is on them. He'd have to spend a few years growing hair, first. [grin]

Yet another practical benefit of being a longhair!
