My friends, upon the recent decision I have made it appears my hair can only grow for so long. You see, Civil War re-enacting has lost it's edge for me yet at the same time I have found World War II re-enacting and it appears infanately more interesting and exciting and my decision was made recently that at the end of this re-enacting season I shall sell all of my Civil War stuff and buy World War II stuff. How does this deal with hair? Well the unit I'll be joining portrays Germans (don't worry, it's the Heer {army} and not the SS so they're German soldiers, not Nazis) and the Germans all had short hair, the hair not daring to touch the ears or the collar of the tunic. Thus I will be forced, by historical accuracy, to get a hair cut around September when I fall in using borrowed stuff, or should that fall through then I can wait untill December. http://www.geocities.com/reg135ofthe45th/Gear.html
well good luck ,the most important thing is that you will have fun doing it, again good luck and have fun (Cody)
So you whimped out on the Civil War? tsk tsk
BTW wasn't the German army called the Wehrmacht?
I didn't quite whimp out and as for Wermacht, well sorta yes and no. Wermacht is German for War Machine so when you say Wermacht it's more the military (Heer, SS, Panzers, Luftwaffe and FallschmirjÄger) and so the German Army is included. But to get technical with it (and jiggy with it, mind you) the exact name for the army was Heer. (The other stuff, SS is...well the SS, the bad guys as it were, the real Nazis. Panzers were in all fields save the Fallschmirjager and they were the tank people, Luftwaffe is airforce and the Fallschmirjager were the paratroopers of the German Wermacht)
SS,
Well, there was the SS (secret police) and the waffen SS which
was Himler trying to play army.

Just so long as you don't become a Hitler Jugend in mind as well!

Ach, ich bin ein Hitler Jugend nichts! I am fascinated with Nazi Germany and I love to learn about Hitler but merely history now and that much I understand. The only thing I agreed with the Nazis with was that Communists are untermensch, or sub human. The Reds can not be changed. Russia is still a Communist state, by God, they just put on a happy face and say they're a Democracy. Anywho, sorry, back onto the topic that's off topic, I'm no Nazi. Just a student of history who either defends the South's reasons or defends the average fighting man of Germany, keeping in mind alot of the men were simply drafted. Most volunteers who wanted to fight for Nazism and Hitler were the ones in the SS. The ones who weren't good enough were scattered about the other forces. I forgot to put in, the Kriegsmarine. I'm sure at least one other person here has seen Das Boot. Ja, das sind Kriegsmarine. I have enclosed a photo of my friend John in his Kriegsmarine uniform.
Well Marc
You have plenty more years in you, maybe you'll take to re-enactment of battles like Troy, or those of the middle ages, when hair length in the armies was not regulated. Maybe then you'll have the opportunity you need.
Hate to see anyone drop out though...but I wish you good luck.
Well if allowable I'd of course like to stay on this forum as I enjoy the atmosphere and the occasional of topic threads are always a treat. Hair is always great to talk about but too much focus can be a bad thing.
Start a Viking raid re-enacting group. :)
Maybe the solusion is to tie your hair into a pony tail and hide it under your helmet during the re-enactment. Hair tied back and hidden under a helmet or hat often looks less visible than hair trimmed to just above the ears.
