Ive had long hair for about 5 years now (im 19), and have often thought of having earings. The feedback i get from people is awlawys conflicting, lots say they make men look like girls, others say that you should only pirce one ear, and if you pirce the wrong one you will look gay (personaly i dont get that).
I'm seriously considering the "pirate 1 small hoop earing" look to augment my long straigt hair.
What are your thoughts on the matter?
Thanks, Mord.
Go for it! I have mid-back length hair and I wear two small earrings in my left ear. I think earrings in one or both ears look great on long haired men.
Good luck.
they look cool i have 3,two in my left ear and 1 in my right ear (Cody)
Sometimes we make the decision to do what we feel is right for us and care less what society thinks is "Normal" Seems you made the decision to wear your hair long so make your own decision on Pierced ears. I never understood the "wrong ear" either so pierce both if you dont like the look, remove them the holes close over in a short time anyway.

Get what YOU want and forget about these idiots opinions. Besides, Long Hair and Earings seem to have a way of complimented ea. other. Why? Who knows. To sport earings if this is your desire simply means this is you expressing yourself.............nothing more.
since you have long hair already, i think ppl will accept also an earring.
if you feel that it will be do good to you. do it !. put the earring on your left ear. just start with one and you see you will feel great !
Hi Mord,
I have very long hair and two earrings, one in each ear and loving it. I don't care what people think or say. So my advise, go for it.
Gilles
History shows that men have worn earrings as decoration all through the ages...it's just decoration like rings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. Some people have to try and put everything into gender specific categories when it doesn't need to be.
By growing your hair out you are already demonstrating that you are making at least some of your own decisions and are not all that concerned with how other people want you to look.
...has got to be one of the stupidest rules I have ever heard of. Who is to say which ear is more masculine? Should I whisper "sweet nothings" only into my husband's left ear? Puh-leeze. He wears three in each ear and has had mid-back length hair for years and years.
JE
My understanding of the left ear right ear rule was not based on one ear being more masculine, but a kind of code, similar to the "hanky code" that was once employed by gays to signify certain preferences. The way I always heard it was "left is right and right is wrong", but then, they were homophobes who were saying it.

I do think there WAS something to it back in the 80's. I think it was a way to "identify". That is, if they only had their right ear pierced.
Anything seems to go today.

The use of "hankies" for that is still very much alive. That is why we find such a great selection of bandanna colors in clothing stores in gay neighborhoods. They are called hankerchiefs in your pocket and bandannas on your head, but they are really the same thing.
Bill
They're found in all colors in "straight" neighborhoods, too, if I can really tell, as I don't really know, LOL. Would you elaborate on this "hanky" rule for one who is unaware of it?
Thanks,
JE
Thank you for the link Ball Guy, I always mean to look that up whenever it has been mentioned here but never get around to it.
What a wonderful system that is so public but unremarkable to those not knowing the meanings. What variety too, there is more going on in the world than I ever knew about. Kinda odd that even navels get their own color but nothing for long hair, oh well. Now I am giggling at the possible message of my camouflage print in lavender, mauve, black, and white. Instead of going by the traditional meanings ascribed to a solid handkerchief in each of those colors I will ascribe to it the meaning of "loves guys having balding heads with long curls who dress attractively, wants to comb and braid his lovely hair and giggle a lot together." No need for me to advertise though, I already have all that I want. :-)))
With a "teddy bear" colored hanky in every pocket,
Elizabeth
Oh, and very good to see you here your ladyship! Is that a chamois I see peeking from your right pocket? Give my regards to the dashing Lord G. :-)
Yes, thank you Ball Guy, for this most interesting and elightening read. I'll share it with Lord G.
Your Highness, I'm rather teddy bear and chamois, but also sport leopard in the right pocket. Darn, but you won't get to see why this coming time around.

Screw what people think, dude. We are all on this earth a very short time, so do what makes you happy while you're here! I have a small pair of Gold hoops, diamond studs (my parents gave me), and some really kewl mystic topaz studs. I say screw the status quo, and wear the pair. It's the "O's"
Of course if you only get one ear pierced, then it's great to have a spare. And if you only pierce one ear, I'd say pierce whatever side you are handed. If you're left handed, do the left ear, ect.
Sincerely, HRH Prince Jeffrey
Well, I'd have to answer with a resounding NO regardless of your gender. I have never liked earings. Metal in flesh. Pretty? It just never made sense. I don't freak about it, because society is geared to expect most women to have them nowadays; but at some point in the future, I can see a serious GF being really puzzled about why I want her to take them out and let the holes close.
Also, not everybody can have them. Some people will get infected even if the initial pierce was sterile. I knew a girl in school like that. Her lobes were red and swolen for weeks. Eeew.
I've heard that in the 1950s it was still considered slutty in certain parts of the country for a woman to have earings. Now most women have them, and lots of guys have them. So, if you get them you will certainly be riding a very long-term cultural shift towards more and more piercings. I'd be surprised if we swung back in the other direction within my lifetime.
Go with what you feel is right for you, although it can be bad to have in a fight. I was thinking about piercing but then since I do tend to fight a lot, didnt want to have a piece of metal torn through my lobe.
I have both ears pierced and wear hoop earrings in both. I could never see the reason for guys only piercing one ear.I also wear larger hoops when I have my hair down. I think long hair and earrings go together for either males or females.
I'm not personally into earrings, but they look OK on others. I always get confused which ear is which, but a guy having two earrings, one on each ear, doesn't signify anything atall, that I'm quite sure of. Mind you, it's quite common to accidentally lose one earring! Apparently, from reading the other posts, it seems that wearing one on the right ear only means you're gay.
When my wife was in her Christian phase, the local vicar used to wear earrings on both ears. One Christmas, one of the ladies in the congregation bought him a pair of earrings that looked like Christmas tree baubles, and he wore them to read the sermon, etc.

These are my earrings - I've had one more done at the bottom since then, but it gives you a rough idea.
I love my earrings and get a new one every year or two - it's no big deal either - if you get it done and you don't like it, just take it out. Nothing lost.
Good luck.

Very cool dude, those look great. I see they are well up your ear. That reminds me of The Edge from U2. BTW I have 3 in my left ear and 4 in the right. Absalom
