Hi,
Just recently a friend allowed me to use his nice digital camera, and I used it to take new pictures of my hair so that I could share them with users of this board and hopefully get helpful responses. (See below for link.)
I am looking for any kind of advice that anyone can give. Many of the pictures were taken right out of the shower and without anything being done to my hair, so you can see how curly it is. (Bummer, because I like straight hair more.) If anyone can recommend care techniques and/or products I would greatly appreciate it. No, I have not decided to have it straightened or anything, but I have to admit that it's very tempting to try.
Also, I do have a few specific questions. One of the biggest is about how visible my scalp is on the top of my head. I don't know why this is and whether or not it is normal. Does it have to do with my hair being curly? Does it have to do with my hair being oily? Am I losing my hair or is my hairline receding? I would really like to know what is going on here. How come I never looked this way with short hair?
I have put together an online photo album with thumbnails and full-size views that is easy to access. Please visit the website below. Please reply or email me with any and all advice or comments.
Thanks,
Rick
Looking great, and don't worry about the scalp visibility. Part of that is because curly hair naturally forms into groupings, with scalp being visible between the sections. I generally noticed it less as my hair got longer.
So you don't think there are any problems? I look around (because it seems that half of the guys I know are growing their hair long) and I don't see this problem with other people's hair. Should I use more shampoo/conditioner? Do I have less hair because it is curly? If so, how much less? How much weaker is it? How many hairs is an acceptable amount to have simply come out each day? Is there any chance that I will be able to accomplish a good amount of length without straightening it?
1) Using more shampoo or conditioner won't help. You should generally use less shampoo and more conditioner so you don't dry out your scalp.
2) Curly heads have as many hairs and straight ones, generally.
3) See above.
4) Curly hair is actually weaker than straight hair because it has an oval shaft as opposed to straight hair's round one.
5) 1 - 100+
6) I advise against straightening, because you really don't want to damage it this early on. Perhaps a method without hear is a straightening balm. I'm not really sure, I've never done it before.
If your hair genetics are so that you can grow your curly hair long, then it might eventually look like Kirk Hammet's.
He had it much longer in the 80s, but still, quite good.

Don't think he straightened it in the 80s neither.

You said that "if" my hair genetics allow me to grow my hair long.
Is there a possibility I can't?!?
Yeah. You'll just have to wait to see how long it'll grow. Some people's grows longer and shorter than others.
