I can't get my wavy ends in the back to lay straight. I have tried hairspray gel It keeps on looking bad. Anyway I can keep my hair in the back from looking unkempt, besides cutting it.

Hi Kenneth - this one is a real "catch 22"
If you trim the back of your hair you'll keep it tidier, until it grows back again. So you then have to trim again. You'll get a couple of good months, then your back where you were.
You can keep trimming it up until your top layers catch-up with the back, but then you have to wait much longer until you have "visibly long" hair.
The flips and waves at the back are caused by your hair pressing against your neck and collar, sooner or later your hair will have to grow past this obsticle, so you will reach a time where you have to face up to this and suffer the bad hair.
Sure its much easier when your hair is all one length as the extra weight will hold it in place more, but this is the trade off with growing it out. It'll take much longer to "look long", your first ponytail will be short and stumpy and you'll feel less like your getting anywhere.
The past 5 months I've been braving it out and the back of my hair still doesn't look great but in 4 or 5 months time my hair will have reached my original "goal length" I'll hold there for a while whilst I even things up and decide where I go from there.
But if you think the back of your hair is untidy, check this photo of me taken in January this year (12 months). This was on a good day!
at least curly hair like we have lets us avoid the mullet stage :)

I don't quite see why you feel bad about your hair in the back. I think the waves on the ends are actually one of the coolest things about long hair!
I know it's not the most macho thing to do but i'm afraid the only way your gonna get those waves out your hair is with a hair straightener.
Sorted_ Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. It's a great color, healthy, and thick. The curls are great. They will stretch out
more as your hair gets longer---and I hope it does--get longer!! You've got a great head of hair. Leave it alone!!! Sorry-I do respect you and your decisions.
Stop looking at the back of your head, how do you manage that anyway?
The back of your head will surely always be more messy than the rest because (among other things) it gets tangled by the friction when you sleep. (in my case the hair on the back of my head is more curly than the rest, so the effect is even more pronounced)
Just think of other things :) Have you looked at the sun or clouds and trees or cement and nice or ugly people real good today?
