I've been growing my hair for the last six years, but it's curly and get dry very easily. I also dyed it a long time to avoid gray hair. It was a kind of damaged. So I decided to take a step behind to walk 20 ahead. My goal is waist lenght, so I cut it from the mid back to shoulder lenght, and straighten it. I think the result is good. It's shorter, all right, but it's more healthy and looks great. Now I just have to patient, ans I'll be. I'm only 40!!! Until I'm 43 it will be waist lenght I hope... Support is always welcome.
Probably a sensible solution to your problem. Good hair, man - very Slash-like. I'm only about half way through my journey - maybe less - and it's been difficult, but with the help of everyone here I've made it further this time than any of the previous 3 times.
Good luck, hope you gain your lost inches quickly.

I stopped dying, but couldn't let go of the length. Instead I suffered through nasty comments about my 2-tone hair. After the first 6 months the comments weren't as frequent, and non-existant by 1 year into growth.
I finally got a "severe" trim of about 3" a couple months ago...you could probably hear the whimpers a block away. I had one other trim, but it was only a 1" loss.
Be careful with the products you choose. Hair that is already dry can be damaged much more easily by coloring AND straightening products!
P.S. as far as over the counter products, I've found Infusium23 and Aussie shampoos/conditioners to be the best. Also, there is an intense contioner made by ... swiss something ... for damaged hair; it works great!
