Hi, I am fairly new to this board and have just experienced a crisis situation. I recently cornrowed my hair to basically work past this akward stage (9 months). When I took out these braids after 2 weeks (which were done fairly tight), I noticed myself losing a massive amount of hair while washing it in the shower. Is this primarily the cause of uprooting do to the tension, or is this normal shedding do to the fact that alot of hairs that were suppose to come out, are coming out now since it was in braids for that long. I appreciate the help! thanks
Mine stayed in for less than 12 hours, and my head got owned. I lost a LOT through the process of braiding, and more from taking them out...
The average head pops out a hundred hairs a day and, as with dreadlocks, with cornrows the hairs cannnot fall out.
Thus when relieved and allowed to move freely they all run away to freedom, that great shower drain in the sky.
There's something else to consider. Most people lose about 100 hairs per day. All those hairs (100 times the number of days) were stuck in the cornrows and weren't released until they were undone. A couple week's worth would be about 1400 hairs. That's a lot, but still normal. Add to that any damaged hairs and it gets worse.

Cornrows do put a lot of tension on your hair and scalp which can cause considerable loss of hair above and beyond your normal shedding. I know cornrows are very popular these days and while they do look really cool, they have a downside and that is increased hair loss. (Increased hair loss means more time in the awkward stage.) My advice is to endure the awkward stage, I know it is difficult, but the reward of nice long flowing hair is well worth it. Absalom
